Text (Omeka Classic)

Every year, 60 million die worldwide, many from communicable diseases like the seasonal flu. So, why did the world shut down at the prospect of 2 million deaths from a new coronavirus? In the face of the flu, we don’t urge folks to wash their hands and doorknobs and light switches and toilet handles, though we should. We don’t conduct public awareness campaigns urging folks to stay home and keep their kids home if they are sick, though we should. We cannot shut down society every time a new virus pops up, because it will happen often. We need robust, regular public health responses that teach folks how to be healthy, and we need people to feel secure enough in their jobs to take time off. But we cannot close the world every time some people will get sick, especially when it’s a fraction of those already sick and dying. I’m not cold-hearted, only practical and realistic. I disagree with Trump and the Republicans on nearly everything, but on this Trump was right. This coronavirus was no big deal compared to the carnage we see in society everyday. Let us get back to work.
