Coronavirus: which works better to handle a pandemic – democracy or autocracy?
This is a news story from the South China Morning Post by Priyanka Shankar. This article is discussing the difference in responses based on forms of government. When it came to handling the pandemic, people from Asian countries where restrictions were much tougher rated a higher rate of satisfaction in government response compared to Latin America and Europe. This was taken from the Democracy Perception Index. According to researcher Fredrick DeVeaux, a leader in conducting this survey, the tight restrictions common in Asian countries are generally accepted because it gets associated with low death rates. The survey does make mention that in countries such as Iran and China, they hid data about the virus from their citizens, affecting their overall response to changes in lockdowns. However, Singapore is also authoritarian, and the prime minister has made an effort to create transparency in what is occurring, so items get hoarded less. Overall, the article claims that the mass mobilization of people and goods under authoritarian regimes fares better than democracies do at creating an effective COVID response. -

California Parents' Opinions on Schools Reopening
This provides a general impression of California's parents' thoughts towards reopening in-person schools. Surveys selected from the country-wide populace as well as California district-wide populations were considered. They don't only provide demographics. They also provide some context and reasons for why the participants felt a certain way. One of those responses was "Yes (only if the vaccine is readily available)", another being "No (prefer distance learning)" by an overwhelming amount. It helps inform us of the public opinion while vaccines were still in its early rollout stages. -

College Daily Screening App
This a screenshot from the Veoci App. At Florida Gulf Coast University, students are required to fill out a survey each morning before coming onto campus. The questions in the survey are presented as followed: 1. Do you intend to come to campus today? 2. Are you a student-athlete? 3. Are you experiencing any NEW symptoms that are causing you to feel unwell today? (If yes, a list of symptoms is then displayed) 4. Have you tested for Covid-19 and/or received results that you have not yet reported to FGCU? 5. Have you been in close contact with someone who has confirmed positive for Covid-19 or with someone who is awaiting results for Covid-19? After filling out the survey, based on the student's answers they will either receive a big green checkmark that indicates that they are permitted onto campus, a yellow caution sign and warning that if you are not feeling well enough to then stay home, or a red circle with a line through it and a message that the student is not allowed on campus and must quarantine. -

1/3 of UK report enjoying lockdown, 40% report weight gain
UK social study reports that around one third of people in the country have reported enjoying lockdown. The same study reports that around 40% of adults have reported gaining weight over lockdown. These are some notable social side effects of lockdown. I found this report both amusing and informative, and a good item to include in the archive. With most peoples lives getting more sedentary during lockdown, weight gain is not surprising to see. Adding into this would be general increases in stress also contributing. What i found most interesting is the 1/3 of people enjoying lockdown. Seeing that made me wonder what behaviors and patterns will persist even past covid, such as things like working from home.
