A Child’s Reflection
We’ve had my 10 year daughter journal her thoughts during the past year from time to time, and they’ve ranged from mundane (“we made a fort”) to outraged (“Black people are being hurt in this country and not being heard”), so I was curious what her reflection on a year in quarantine would be. Interestingly, her reflection is overall positive. This surprised me a bit, since she is doing online learning through the end of the school year, missed an entire season of competitive gymnastics and has not had a Girl Scout meeting in person in over a year. I’ll admit I’m relieved that her inner thoughts are about Minecraft, playing in our flooded backyard, and continuing to practice gymnastics at home rather than focusing on all that she’s missed. It makes me think that though this year has impacted my kids that to them, their childhood is still pretty normal. Now I just have to break it to her that when she returns to in person instruction next year, she won’t be able to listen to her music during class! -

Recreation During Covid
This is the creative project I've been working on in Minecraft to handle the stress of attending grad school during the Covid19 pandemic. Minecraft and other video games have been sources of stress release and social interaction since forced isolation/quarantine and restrictions on social gathering has resulted in more people playing games and joining online communities for the needed social interaction for the maintenance of their mental health. -

Redecorating
Before the pandemic, my room was very unorganized and had just a bed and a table with a tv on it. Being in my room for months straight without leaving my house and having nothing to do or having anything to occupy my mind was getting to me. I realized that I was probably going to spend more months in my small boring room. I decided to use my money I had to redo my whole room and add some furniture. I built most of my furniture with the help of my dad. I bought a desk, to finally have a place where I could do my work, and a dresser, to replace my old table with my tv on it and put some clothes in it. I did some DIY things like that mirror on my desk as shown in the picture and added plants and other things. Having a better environment to work in and having a goal I could work on improved my attitude toward spending all day in my room. apart from having this project I Facetimed a lot with my friends and played games like Minecraft. Finding little, or big, fun things to do while staying safe could really help you stay sane during these times. -

Diary of a Quarantined Teen: 2020-2021 Edition
Here lies a photo of my monitor, which I believe represents my current experience as a junior in high school. Pictured on the monitor is classwork, the bane of many students going through distance learning. It connects to the pandemic as most, if not all, students are being forced to go online to complete classwork and connect to Zoom classes as we suffer through our teen years. The internet is where many have come to meet new people, find answers, and much more, which all starts through our electronic devices. Personally, my devices have kept me sane since the pandemic first struck, but also became a major source of anxiety. This miracle holds numerous games in which I can release my stress and anger through, such as Valorant and Minecraft. In addition, it allows me to communicate with my friends through Discord, something that most teens utilize. However, it is where I sit for hours starting from as early as 7:30 am, to as late as 3:00 am, just for school. This may not be the healthiest thing to do, especially since all of this occurs in my bedroom, a place that used to be my haven. What was initially my safe space became a source of a multitude of emotions, such as stress, anger, joy, and much more. There is no longer a true feeling of comfort in any place I can think of, which really is the most disappointing part of it all. But, it’s just part of being a quarantined teen, right? During this quarantine, I believe I have changed for the better in most aspects, though my mental health has reached the lowest point it has ever gone. I’ve made so many new friends, something that I believe is somewhat hard for me, so I consider it a significant accomplishment. Most importantly, I have learned to prioritize myself. Although I’m not quite there yet, big decisions take baby steps, and thanks to it, I feel like I’m slowly getting better mentally. Unfortunately, I have also lost and drifted from friends, and lost a few people in my life due to the virus. As much as I want to feel sorry for myself, to just cry and complain about the unfairness of life, almost everyone is going through something due to the pandemic, so the best I can do is to stay silent and keep on pushing. -

The future of music festivals might be inside video games
There has been multiple online festivals hosted inside video games such as Minecraft, with Lavapalooza, or Fortnite, the infamous Travis Scott event. Many of these events proceeds have gone directly to charity regarding Covid-19 relief. These digital live music events raise the question of the viability of hosting a digital festival in a post-pandemic world. -

GGHS Replica in Minecraft
NOTE: The following replica was not created by me but a few friends of mine. They gave me a tour and permission for some of my other friends to use this map for a Spanish Oral. This particular snap of this area is the same area my friends and I hanged out during lunch. Since a month and more has passed in quarantine, it was inevitable that I would dearly miss it. So when I joined my friend's server spawned at the school entrance, I was hit by a wave of pure nostalgia. I tried recreating the routes I got to classes. Not everything was exactly recreated perfectly, though I can still remember those areas by heart. As impressive and nostalgic it was, it showed that there could be potential in using virtual sandboxes to recreate real life facilities. Just imagine if Garden Grove High School required us to run Minecraft in order to go to school. -

True Social Distancing
This image is from a recording that I did for an assignment in my Spanish class. We used Minecraft to show a "real-life" conversation between students in Garden Grove High. This image is important to me because it shows the problems and the workarounds that emerge with the COVID 19 situation. -

High School Students Resort to Minecraft to Complete School Project During COVID-19
Every quarter, our Vietnamese teacher assigns us a project where we must film a video based on a topic we learned during that specific quarter. Normally, we would meet up in person to film the video, but when the pandemic became more severe and stay-at-home orders were put in place, we had to be more creative with how we filmed. Unable to meet up in person, we resorted to Minecraft in order to film our 3rd Quarter video, which was based on a Vietnamese novel we read in class. #GGHSAPUSH #distancelearning -

100 gecs Announce Minecraft Festival With Charli XCX, Kero Kero Bonito, A.G. Cook, & More - Benefit for Feeding America
100 gecs are announcing a Minecraft music festival, because of course they are. The extremely online weirdo-pop duo of Dylan Brady and Laura Les played their first-ever show on Minecraft early last year, and now that all live music is cancelled and people like American Football are headlining virtual concerts in Minecraft, 100 gecs have decided to host a video game fest of their own. Their music festival, Square Garden, is a benefit to raise money for Feeding America. 100 gecs and Charli XCX are co-headlining, and the lineup also includes other collaborators and kindred spirits like Kero Kero Bonito, A.G. Cook, GFOTY, Cashmere Cat, Benny Blanco, Danny L Harle, Dorian Electra, Alice Longyu Gao, Count Baldor, Umru, Tommy Cash, 99Jakes, Alice Gas, Gupi, Fraxiom, and Parry Gripp. -

Carleton College Chapel in Minecraft
Carleton College students, like many college students in the United States, are currently facing several weeks of separation and online courses. To help foster connections to each other and to the campus we call home, we have begun to design a replica of our campus in Minecraft. This image is the impressively designed and highly accurate rendering of Carleton’s chapel in Minecraft. -

Carleton Campus in Minecraft
Like students from across the United States, Carleton College students are trying to remain connected during a 5-week stretch of online classes. One avenue of connection is our shared Minecraft server, in which we are building a replica of our college campus. This is an impressively designed and highly accurate rendering of our chapel on campus.
