Pelosi endorses strategy to combine Ukraine, COVID aid
This is a news story from The Hill by Mike Lillis. This is about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi combining COVID aid with Ukraine aid into one package. This strategy is intended to help Congress pass the spending needed for Ukraine for the war. Currently, the CDC has said that overall need for aid has diminished as cases keep going down, with more guidelines being removed. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said the prospect that combining the two bills could delay them both is “a real consideration” that will likely influence the ultimate strategy. -

Economic Student Support
The Student Emergency Fund at St. Mary's was part of an economic relief through the CARES act; where students got financial support via the university. I personally used this fund to help pay for school and basic necessities, like food and bills. It was a relief that students, like myself, were able to obtain this financial support throughout the pandemic and it's still available for all students. -

Wolfeboro Storm Damage
These are two screenshots of a post and comment from the official Camp Wolfeboro Facebook page talking about damage the camp sustained in January 2021 from storms. The post provides a donation link for people to donate money to fix the damage; the post notes the donation goal is $20,000. The post notes that 40 trees fell in camp and that the water heater shed was destroyed. A comment left by the camp account under the post says "At this time, about 40 trees down in camp and on the road. The water heater shed has also been destroyed. This information is as of Sunday, no news on the storms of the past 48 hours". The post was uploaded on January 27, 2021. -

ASU COVID Resources
This is the Arizona State University-specific COVID-19 resources for students. I wanted to include this University's specific resources because one of the people I interviewed attends ASU as a student and I want to provide this source as a supplement for some of the difficulty that he mentioned having in finding resources while living as a person experiencing housing instability. The website houses all messages and updates the university has sent to students with regard to the Coronavirus. The site focuses on health and staying healthy for students but seems to lack a clear guide on how to access resources and aid that students may qualify for. -

Covid-19 Alberta Data
This website is the official COVID-19 data tracker for the province of Alberta, this one in particular covers the increase of cases in Alberta on April the 7th, the increase in cases mirrored Ontario’s own massive outbreak of 3,000 new cases. Because of this, it is becoming more and more apparent that Alberta will be forced into another lockdown or at least a return to ‘step 1’ reopening restrictions. More and more Albertans are suffering from lockdown fatigue, and there is blatant unrest as many are becoming fed up with the constant opening and reopening, returning to step one – there has not been a decisive ‘win’ over the pandemic and many would point the government’s inaction to prove this. In regards to my small town of Cochrane Alberta, some businesses are stating that they will not shut-down with the return to step 1 or a renewed lockdown. Largely, they are stating that a lockdown would further gut small businesses which have suffered immensely from these restrictions – stating that smaller businesses have been largely left out to dry without provincial aid, while larger corporations continue to operate. Many of these larger businesses have operated throughout the pandemic while smaller businesses have been forced to shut their doors. On top of this, the same penalties apply to these larger stores, there have been large congested crowds lining up outside of such stores such as Ikea, or Wal-Mart; a condition which would result in a deathly fine if it were given to smaller businesses; but for these international corporations, these fines are nothing. While I’m personally in favor of lockdowns, it is hard to ignore the leniency given to these major corporations and the harm to these smaller businesses. Fore mostly we must protect human life by preventing the spread of COVID-19, yet we must also provide sufficient financial aid to these businesses; while also adjusting penalties to actually hurt these mega-corps when they break pandemic restrictions. However under a government which prides itself on austerity and corporate tax cuts, this will not happen. The attached image is the spike in cases on the 7th. -

Analyzing a water usage during COVID article
The Pacific Institute Article is here (in the document this was the link but ill just give the actual URL below)!! “As many people have put together a water shortage is happening because of COVID. This is because so many more people are using longer showers and stuff while they stay home as they are uncomfortable doing their business outside of home. In Portsmouth, England water demand increased by 15% throughout the past 10 months. Here in SF water demand for residential blocks gained 10% whilst decreasing by over 30% everywhere else. There are also many other facts given other than Portsmouth and SF.” Is the main info the article is given through a very stately manner. This article also likes using numbers which I like about it giving facts instead of something they think. The article keeps circling back to utilities and is clearly meant for DIY workers instead of giving other info. It also heads sections unlike many other articles on other subtopics. This is actually quite useful if you need certain information like using the article much more as a source than most other articles. Even with all this I still think it is an article, not a list of instructions or facts. -

COVID Stimulus Check: Grad School in Quarantine
This meme, posted on the popular social media platform Reddit, represented and still represents the feelings of many Americans as they attempted to survive the pandemic with a one time payment of $1,200. For many college students there was no money at all, it is common for parents to still claim their adult children as dependents for tax purposes and because of that their children were not eligible for the stimulus check. Thousands of students, including myself, had to make it through without even the small one-time payment provided by the government. With the pandemic still going strong there is talk of another stimulus but if the same problems with tax status occur again then it won't mean anything to many struggling students. -

Mask On or Mask Off?
This tweet from the Omaha World Herald highlights a very real concern that is on everyone's mind in the middle of the pandemic: the economy. In Nebraska, there appears to be a fear that if mask mandates are made a state order, the stimulus money for coronavirus relief could be withheld. It is a part of the larger struggle between state leaders and the federal government over health and safety guidelines. This item was added usingTAGS v6.9.1, searching under keyword #Nebraska. Within that search I have chosen to add this item because it speaks on the ongoing debate over the safety and necessity of masks. -

Indigenous families given new lease on life as pandemic opens up housing options
This article relays an unexpected benefit to the pandemic. Because more people are staying put, putting off moving for work and school, among other reasons, there has been a downturn in the rental market. This has opened up better and more plentiful housing options for those struggling to find accommodations for large families when builders and landlords prefer smaller single or two bedroom units. Centres which aid women leaving abusive relationships and indigenous people (or both), such as the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health, are finding this a particular boon, allowing them to clear their waiting lists/backlogs and find housing for clients previously in limbo. -

Distance Learning in Allaikh
Schools of Chokurdakh, Olenegorsk, Berelyakh learned in Russian Ust and Byagnyr where they wore masks and kept a safe distance. After a few weeks, an order was issued to transition to distance learning. “During the restrictive regime, parents and legal representatives have received applications and consent to transfer students to distance learning. The educational process is carried out through landline and cellular telephony, through the email of parents (legal representatives) and through the educational platform “Uchi.ru”. Grades are set for completed assignments by students. On the passage of the program and educational material, teachers keep a report on the control sheets for the implementation of program material, and the responsible coordinator of the correspondence form of training forms sheets of teachers' working hours. Certain categories of students for the period of the restrictive regime are provided with food in the form of dry rations, which set includes: stewed beef, condensed milk, paste, cereals, pasta, sugar, jam, etc.” #IndigenousStories -

Through Chinese Social Media -- 3
I’m a study-abroad student. Due to the virus, I had to stay at my home in New York. I got the update of the virus through Chinese social media, and I think it is really interesting. I’m going to share some posts from Chinese social media about the virus. The post shares the current situation in the front lines. The photos in the post are so touching. Disease, urgency, risk, and death are the themes of twelve hours. People in the front line were trapped behind masks and face masks, breathing hard, causing them to feel severe headaches. Even though, they are still insisting on caring all the patients. -

Humanizing the heroes
Below is a photograph of Brian Sarkisian. An Auburn Mass. hometown hero, state champion baseball player, and now an essential medical worker at UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester Massachusetts. Brian is a kind and gentle man whose only goal has ever been to help those in need. He is a nursing student at Worcester State University who previously picked up shifts at UMass Memorial as a student nurse to help people and gain experience for his practice. Now he works tirelessly around the clock handling non COVID-19 patients so that the doctors can focus their efforts. Brian speaks often about the business of the hospital and his constant fear of contracting the virus, but still he says that he would never trade or give up what he’s doing for the world. In a quote he gave me Mr. Sarkisian states “This is what I’ve always wanted to do. I’m in this field and in school for it because I want to make the worst times in people’s lives bearable”. Thank you for everything you do Brian Sarkisian. -

Low Barrier COVID-19 Cultural Relief Grants, MACCNO, New Orleans, LA
While numerous non-profits created grants to assist New Orleans musicians out of work due to COVID-19, many required financial paperwork and immediate access to a computer. Many of New Orleans culture bearers most in need were unable to apply for assistance. MaCCNO created a low barrier grant to assist these folks. The document reads: "MaCCNO remains committed to ensuring all members of our cultural community have access to relief during the COVID-19 crisis, but we know many musicians, traditional culture bearers, and other cultural practitioners are struggling to access the resources they need. To meet that challenge, drawing from the lessons learned by Sweet Home New Orleans, we have launched our own “low barrier” $250 mini-grants, which are available to members of the cultural community who work/practice in and around New Orleans. To date, we've already given out nearly 100 grants to working musicians, street performers, Black Masking Indians, dancers, Social Aid and Pleasure Club members, burlesque performers, and many others. Grants are distributed on a rolling basis, so the more money we can raise, the more people we can assist. We know those most in need of aid are often the least likely to be able to access it, so we are operating via referrals, proactively reaching out to members of the cultural community who then connect us with people they know are in need (however, self-referrals are also possible). When we connect with a person in need of aid, we conduct a roughly 10 minute intake session over the phone. Once complete, funds are distributed via Paypal, CashApp, or paper check as soon as possible. Priority is given to those aged 70+ and individuals who are having difficulty accessing other forms of financial assistance." -

This photo signifies our absolute need for a higher power, God, in a time like we are going through with Covid-19. #REL101 -

COVID Aid Offer in Chalk
The South City area of Saint Louis is a diverse, tight-knit community. It only makes sense that residents would go out of their way to assist each other during this difficult time. The residents of this home near the intersection of Arsenal St. and Gravois Rd. advertised resources in chalk writing on the exterior of the house, including a LinkTree website, toll-free helpline, and email account dedicated to helping those in need and connecting volunteers with service opportunities. There are also children’s chalk drawings of flowers and a rainbow on the exterior and of a rainbow and a pot of gold taped to the window. #DePaulHST391 -

Seattle-area Sikh community leans on core values to help those in need during coronavirus pandemic
