Masking through the pandemic
I have submitted this picture to show what it was like just to be at school during the pandemic. This is a picture of my friend and I in band class. We had to wear masks, and even had special musician masks we had to wear while playing our instruments. This was a very hard time, especially with it being my senior year of high school. I just wanted things to be normal again. -

COVID-19 and my life.
I’ll keep this as short and detailed as possible since I could go on and on about how the past few years sucked but also were good. When COVID-19 came to the United States in 2020 I was a Senior in Highschool about to graduate. I was in band with the wind ensemble and I did winter guard as well. I went to Meridian tech in the afternoon for biomedical sciences and was in all sorts of honors clubs. Because of COVID-19 I missed all of our band competitions in the spring, the rest of winter guard, all of my senior activities, a “normal” graduation, and more. I graduated in July instead of May. I respect and followed the mask mandates but it definitely sucked during times like graduation because that was such a special moment that was tarnished by the pandemic. I feel for the 2021 seniors but they at least had a warning. We didn’t. They had time to plan and we didn’t. After that I went to Oklahoma state university and I’m still there. It’s hard to believe that I’m about to be a Junior in college. The last few years have flown by. I missed out on a lot of opportunities and experiences along with everyone else. Luckily, the pandemic seems to be dying down but I know it’s still here. It pisses me off when people say it’s not that bad. One death or millions of deaths is bad and I wish people respected and understood that. But sadly, some don’t and they take this pandemic as a joke. I have yet to get COVID and I’m very happy about that and don’t plan on getting it ever hopefully. It’s caused de watering consequences on both a personal level and a nation wide level. This past year I had other personal experiences that didn’t help which was that my Grandma passed (from heart condition) unexpectedly, I came out to my parents as a lesbian and they’re homophobic, one of my dogs is in renal failure currently, my elderly neighbor who is like another grandma to me got run over by a car (she’s doing good now), I’ve made mistakes that caused me a lot of pain but I corrected them and am working on myself, and more. I know everything I’m saying is so negative but I can’t recall a whole lot that was positive in the last two years. My best friend is my girlfriend and we’ve been dating for 4 years, I just went to an oddities expo, etc. so at least there’s some positive things. There’s more that I haven’t said but not a whole lot more. Either way since 2020 life has been very hard. Not just for me but everyone. I just hope it goes up from here. -

Cancer and Coronavirus
Once coronavirus restrictions were lifted in my state (May), I made an appointment to get the physical I needed in order to participate in the upcoming band season. After going over my family history and having a routine exam, my doctor suggested I get a mammogram although I'm only 34. I got everything scheduled, went to my exam, and two days later got a call saying my results were abnormal and I needed to come in for another mammogram and MRI. My entire family was worried about me and my husband felt so helpless. Due to coronavirus restrictions, he was unable to go inside the building for any of my appointments and I had to face many things alone. The doctor discovered a suspicious mass and I was told I needed a biopsy immediately. I had to wait 5 days, first, because I needed to be tested for coronavirus before they could do the procedure. After getting my biopsy, the wait for results took a couple days and when they came in, I was relieved to find out I do not have cancer! But, an already scary experience was elongated due to the pandemic and I was left without support for a lot of it. -

A Description of my Experiences While Learning Virtually
Things started out O.K., but band was a mess, and classes seemed very boring. I usually got up around my usual 6:00 a.m., but I didn't make my lunch as I used to, because I didn't need to. I then would practice piano, and then I would have an hour to do nothing, unless I had Jazz Lab, then it would be more like 30 minutes. School itself wasn't all that different, sine the only thing that changed was that it was a block schedule and that almost everything was online. The homework load decreased significantly, there were almost no group projects. They changed the Wednesday schedule a few times, but I got used to those pretty quickly. After a while, I kind of felt like there was no schedule at all. Once we got to go to campus to do remote learning, things felt more normal which was really nice. -

Coronaland: Roots of Music's graduation
2600-block of Burgundy, Roots of Music's graduation Due to COVID, this wonderful program couldn't have its traditional graduation so they moved it outside. As a supporter of Roots of Music I got an email about it and was happy to be "in the audience" for this group who, tho they're only graduating from 8th grade, play on the college level -

Life Without Live (1)
"Like all fans of music, sports, movies, any kind of public ritual that involves a crowd, I keep thinking about the Last Time. For me, that was seeing the Philly punk trio Control Top on March 5th, at Union Pool in Brooklyn. The singer jumped into the crowd and tackled one of her friends. (The friend was the singer from Yohuna, whom I had tickets to see a few weeks later at Trans-Pecos.) They rolled on the floor, screaming into the mic together. I grabbed a snack at the taco truck between bands, wrote in my notebook for a while, hung out late to see friends and argue with the guitarist about the Hüsker Dü discography. I asked the singer about my favorite song, the one where I always think she’s screaming about strange chickens. (It’s really “Straight Jackets.”) It was a glorious Thursday night. But now it feels like a different planet." -
