Moving away from the pandemic in Arkansas
This article details a sharp decline in the number of Arkansans on ventilators due to COVID-19. It further provides information on a new oral drug to combat the pandemic in Arkansas. While cases in Arkansas regularly fluctuate, it is encouraging to see individuals off ventilators which removes some of the strain most Arkansas hospitals have been experiencing over the last two years. A rise in vaccinations and a greater understanding of the disease allows for a return to normalcy that many states are now experiencing. Additionally, and oral drug to combat COVID-19 is helpful and will allow the disease to be easily managed. -

Feeling Awkward in Your Mask?
This is an Instagram post by gailwaldby. This is a comic of showing you how you can deal with wearing a mask while other people aren't wearing one. Some of the advice includes: ignoring people, focusing on the task at hand, and remembering why you are wearing a mask still. For some, they might have reasons for wanting to continue wearing a mask if they are high risk, or are in contact regularly with people that are high risk. Others might not feel confident in cases not going down as much as the news claims, so that could be another reason to continue wearing a mask. Whatever the case, some might have anxiety standing out if they are one of the only people wearing a mask in a public setting. -

1 person dies every 6 minutes: How L.A. became the nation's largest coronavirus hot spot
LOS ANGELES — In Los Angeles County, 10 people on average test positive for the coronavirus every minute. Every six minutes, someone dies from Covid-19, according to county public health data. The startling figures come as Los Angeles became the first county in the nation to record 1 million confirmed coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic. According to county public health officials, roughly 1,003,923 people in L.A. have been infected with the virus and more than 13,000 people have died. The numbers are equally sobering across the state. California has nearly 2.9 million confirmed coronavirus cases and more than 31,000 deaths, according to NBC News counts. A more contagious variant of the virus has also been detected in the region. -

Harvard epidemiologist outlines steps still needed to flatten curve and doubts schools US reopening anytime soon.
Once again I felt the importance of this tweet is related to my own state and even my own school. Here we have a leading expert on Covid highlighting the steps needed to flatten the curve (masks, no large indoor gatherings, no reopening early), yet all these steps have been disregarded by my state. For example, Mill Ave, popular clubbing area in Tempe, had clubs fully open, packed with people, and no masks required just last weekend. And of course the state has already fully opened up. The epidemiologist also shares his doubts about schools reopening in the fall and still being safe, but ASU has already committed to being back on campus in the fall, which highlights the seemingly random decision making taking place all across the nation as institutions, states, and business have to decide between public health and economics.
