Silver Lining- creativity brought on by the pandemic
I found myself doing “creative” things that I hadn’t had time for previously and so I asked Staten Island artists what they had created during the pandemic. For some it was a reaction to the politics of the time. For others it was an opportunity to try new media. -
Summer 2020
Culture at a Social Distance
My submissions for #lockdownstatenisland are two examples of creative measures local cultural institutions implemented in Summer 2020 to continue to serve the public safely outdoors. The first is the #WomenoftheNationArise outdoor exhibition at the Staten Island Museum. The gallery exhibition opened a week before lockdown during Women’s History Month - March 2020. Since the galleries had to be closed, the outdoor exhibit gave visitors to Snug Harbor Cultural Center had the chance to explore Staten Island’s role in the fight for women’s right to vote from a #socialdistance. The second is at Historic Richmond Town’s socially distanced recreation area. With picnic tables and chalk circles on the grass, Historic Richmond Town provided a safe outdoor space to enjoy fresh air, sunshine, a book, an ice cream cone, and some time with friends or loved ones. -

Help for envisioning the future
This website represents the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. It's a pretty remarkable approach to thinking about how we will live in the future. A quotation on the site, from Buckminster Fuller, is a perfect inspiration for the call #SMhopes: an Archive of Hopes and Dreams: "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." -

Images and Audio from "Arizona's COVID-19 Pandemics" Exhibit
During March and April 2021, I created an online exhibit from content within Arizona State University's "A Journal of the Plague Year" COVID-19 archive. Entitled "Arizona's COVID-19 Pandemics," the digital exhibit contained images previously submitted to the archive, along with several copyright-free images I found on pexels.com. I have attached all these images. Listed by their order of appearance within the exhibit, their sources are as follows: 1- "Face It" Campaign flyer: Coconino County Health & Human Services ( https://covid-19archive.org/s/archive/item/42998 ) 2- Red Rocks, Sedona: Courtesy of Gregory Whitcoe via Pexels.com 3- Online Learning: Courtesy of August de Richelieu via Pexels.com 4- Tséhootsooí Medical Center staff: Courtesy of FDIHB Marketing Department and Navajo Times newspaper ( https://covid-19archive.org/s/archive/item/41189 ) 5- Arizona's Mask Mandate Map: created by Sarandon Raboin ( https://covid-19archive.org/s/archive/item/26267 ) 6- Arizona COVID-19 Infection Zip Code Map: Courtesy of Arizona Department of Health Services ( https://covid-19archive.org/s/archive/item/42035 ) 7- Woman Shopping: Courtesy of Anna Shvets via Pexels.com 8- Woman on Rural Arizona Road: Courtesy of Taryn Elliot via Pexels.com 9- Masked Woman in Crowd: Courtesy of Redrecords via Pexels.com 10- The Wave: Courtesy of Flickr via Pexels.com (this image is found only in the PDF submission of the exhibit, not in the public-facing exhibit itself due to document formatting technicalities - the PDF version can be found at https://covid-19archive.org/s/archive/item/42998 ) -

Frustrated Covid post I'm nonessential. The Birmingham university my museum is under isn't switching to online and they still have 400+ students living on campus. Ok, so our museum has been closed to the public for almost two weeks and the university has told all employees to work from home BUT us. I'm working remotely a little bit, but all the staff were told to come in today to deep clean the museum, which is an enclosed metal room and that's like ten-plus of us in one room. We have custodial staff who have the materials and knowledge to do this properly, but... -

My life for the past weeks and likely many to come, is all about how the community can support our businesses. They are taking heroic steps to slow the spread of COVID-19, knowing the crippling impact it will have on the lives of their employees as well as their business. A job is invaluable when you don't have one. -

We have made adjustments as far as going out. Just small get togethers with close friends and whatnot. But our lives have been severely altered due to this pandemic. We've coped the best we can, but it's still hard to not be able to go out with friends or run to the store whenever we want. Yet even though it's hard, we all are very aware of how it could be much worse. We need to stick together as a nation and as a society now more than ever. -

Despite the changing environment COVID-19 has left my business with, I have been able to adapt at an equally swift pace. As an essential business who serves the Tri-State's plastic manufactures, MAC Industrial Services has been poised to mostly maintain a sense of security; to its employees, customers and stakeholders. At times I am uncertain if we can work tomorrow. At other times we are working overtime! This is in the face of our colleagues struggling to keep afloat and the CARES Act slow process. For now, we take it day by day and are honored to be employed. -
