NHS Approved PPE
This is an Instagram post by sciquipuk. This is a store that sells NHS approved PPE for people to buy. Throughout the pandemic, I have seen people use a variety of these items. I have mostly seen masks. Every once in a while, I have seen people use face shields. This is a good post that demonstrates some of the things people have regularly worn during the course of the pandemic. -

The Clonky Helmet
I personally worked as a COVID 19 screener for South Texas Veterans Affairs. During that time we as COVID screeners were required to wear face shields and masks on our face for more than eight hours a day. After reading the article I posted from the CDC -- it now does not seem like it was a requirement at all for health workers to wear the face shields. I preferred to wear the ones that were much lighter. They were also face shields, but they were not in a shape of a helmet, they were lighter, and easier to handle as we screeners went from one job station to another. During the pandemic, while employed as a COVID 19 screener-- if we were caught without wearing the helmet (face shield) our jobs were threatened. We were only allowed to take the face shields off intermittently, for example, while at lunch. -

Corona Culture Products
These pictures are a collection of Corona themed products from summer 2020 to January 2021. As you can see, there was a great variety of products and some of the most unusual appeared starting 2021. Of particular note is the coffee mug and a small wall plaque. Even the infant phrases "Social distancing" and "Healthcare worker" had crept into daily items in real stores. By fall, masks were being advertised in stores on long plastic hangers and had become just as common on random aisles as dish gloves, scrubber pads, and dryer balls. By January 2021, companies had begun to get creative with masks and shields. The final picture shows a set of children's face shields encased with the features of animal heads. This was likely to appeal to children who like to pretend to be animals. One company also began to make masks in small, medium, large, and extra large, to accommodate the variety of face shapes among the public (not pictured). The most important thing about all these products is that they show how deeply embedded Corona had become in United States culture despite the fact that it was not even a year since the virus appeared in the U.S. This indicates that companies were actively involved in both creating and maintaining a COVID consumer culture that tied what people experienced to what they could buy. Although more difficult to determine, it also shows a demand for such items both out of necessity (masks) and for leisure or fun (mug, animal shields). These items also reveal that COVID-19 was a highly unique event in that it was so marketable. No other event in the 21st century generated as much cultural/societal presence as Corona. These products should be further studied to see what better understanding about Corona can be gained from them. -

Helpful, Novelty Add-ons for Corona Accessories
Here are 5 pictures of various accessories for masks and hand sanitizer that began to appear in the last months of 2020 and early 2021 and have continued to the present (April 2021). Among them are mask "straps" and "chains" much like glasses strings for eyeglasses to keep a person's mask from accidentally falling off their face. Another picture shows a "posh" faux leather mask wristlet with a matching pouch for hand sanitizer. For those going on a airplane, a complete Corona safety travel kit including masks, antiseptic wipes, a headrest cover, and disposable gloves is produced by the company IFLY Smart. Finally, the emphasis on preventing potentially COVID-19 infected droplets from getting on someone's face lead to an entire pantheon of plastic shields attached to the wearer with bands or even hats of which this final picture is only one of many examples. These pictures show how businesses were quick to capitalize on the new problems, needs, and wants of a society having to accommodate Corona Accessories. It also shows how rapidly COVID was commercialized which is unusual for a significant event in the 21st century. Arguably, no single event in the 21st, and perhaps only World War II in the 20th, ever so thoroughly entered the public consumer culture like Corona. The prevalence of these products may also hint at the demand for them. -

Covid Procedures
Covid-19 brought all sorts of new safety precautions and guidelines. The biggest one being masks. Everywhere you go masks are completely mandatory. Stores, restaurants and businesses. It is not ideal because the masks are uncomfortable and sometimes makes it hard to breath. Although they have made face shields and breathable masks to help. Keeping your hands clean is super important for keeping you safe during this time. Social distancing was the most difficult rule of all. Quarantine was difficult because people missed friends and extended family. Months and months of online school and work was hard for everyone but now we are slowly going back to that way things were. Overall, Covid has brought new perspectives on how to keep everyone healthy and safe during times like these. -

マスクめぐり機内で乱闘 フェースシールドは着用(2020年10月7日) - Brawl on the plane about the mask Wearing the face shield (October 7, 2020)
This is a news where on an airplane, a fight happened because a man was wearing a face shield, but not a mask. I would think wearing a face shield is better than nothing, but not enough and for himself and others on the plane, the man should have worn a mask. There is another brawl over wearing a mask. Two passengers had a conflict on an LCC (low-cost carrier) airliner heading from Arizona to Utah in the United States. The two argued over wearing a mask, and then became a brawl. A police officer who happened to be on the airplane came in between and calmed down the matter. The airline requires all passengers to wear masks at all times, but it is believed that the passenger was involved in the fight because he wore face shields but not a mask under the face shield. -

Wendy's During Corona Season
A job in food service is almost never fun. However, a global pandemic tends to somehow make it worse. I work at Wendy's along with my friend Trinity (pictured in photo #2). Working at the same restaurant before and during the COVID-19 pandemic allows us to really experience the impacts of it all, and we see the changes every day. Wearing masks, gloves, and sometimes face shields, at all times is just one example of the "new normal" in food service. The lax environment of work before the pandemic seems almost comedic compared to what is now required. However, the internal changes during COVID-19 are a drop in the bucket compared to the change in how customers treat us. What used to be a few rude customers in a majority of nice customers has completely changed. It may be the fear of the virus, or the newfound unfamiliarity with the outside world, but food/customer service has never been so taxing on workers. -

“Friday the 13” Healthcare Workers
Photograph of healthcare workers in protective bodysuits. This photograph is extremely powerful. Healthcare workers are risking their lives every day to save people, working hours on end and we should be thankful for their work every single day. Florida Army Guard Deploys to Nursing Home
These screenshots of pictures from an article posted on the Department of Defense's website detail how the 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team has traded in their rifles for PPE and COVID-19 test kits. Deployed to the Alexander Nininger, Jr., Veterans Nursing Home in Pembroke Pines, Florida, these soldiers conduct tests as mobile teams, while administering tests to staff before entering the facility. Moreover, these screenshots also give an idea of the total scope of the Florida Guard's COVID-19 mission, including its operations beyond nursing home facilities. -

A New Perspective on "Child Looks Into Barrel of Rubber Bullet Gun During Protests in Long Beach, California"
Photographer, Richard Grant, captured a photo of a child sitting atop their father's shoulders during the Long Beach, California protests that followed George Floyd's death. It appears as if the cops in the photograph are pointing a rubber bullet gun directly at the father and child. The photographer recently posted the unedited photograph to Instagram and a caption stating that the photograph is not fake and that he does not believer the officer was intentionally or directly pointing the gun at the father and child. This statement by Richard Grant combats one of the reasons that perhaps the photograph went viral in the first place. Namely, that the officer was deliberately pointing the gun directly at the child. "First thing the photo is not fake. It is not Photoshopped. What I saw through the viewfinder is what is here. There was color correction and cropping so it could look better on Instagram when I posted it. I have stated before that I do not believe in the 1/500th of a second that the picture was made in that the officer was aiming at the man with the child. This is an uncropped photo with no color correction. I used a 24 -70mm lens at 70mm and f 3.5." Deliberate or not, the photograph reminds us to stop and think about the impact the events of 2020 are having on our children today and in the future. -

Child Looks Into Barrel of Rubber Bullet Gun During Protests in Long Beach, California
Following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 25, 2020, protests erupted across the nation. During protests in Long Beach, California, Richard Grant captured a striking image of a cop pointing a rubber bullet gun at a father with his child on his shoulders. Children across the United States today are experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic and a large scale civil rights movement. What short and long term impacts will these moments have on our children? -

Water bottle mask sign
My roommate took this photo on her daily walk, something she started doing early on in quarantine to stay active while staying safe. It asks for people to recycle their plastic water bottles so that they can be made into face shields for our health care workers. Health workers are facing a lack of PPE and individuals have started making face masks for them to use. *Anjelica Oswald, Northeastern University -
