The Beginning of the International Journey
During COVID-19 in 2020, some international students could not come to St. Mary’s due to closed embassies and lack of resources. In Spring 2021, international students came to continue their studies after studying online in their first semester. Days before coming to the U.S, international students received an email letting them know what they need to complete before arriving at the university. For some international students, this symbolizes the beginning of a new journey and the start of their experience at St. Mary’s University. -

Another One Bites the Dust
Insecure work is nothing new but I was too lucky to hop onto welfare when my hospitality job wrapped up for the lockdown. Really feel for my colleagues, international students and others who aren't supported in the same way and have to hustle in exploitative arrangements. No workers compensation, pay well below minimum wage, and increased risk of contracting coronavirus all while keeping the city fed. These folks are holding it down for us without getting much back. Reform is needed. -

An app that’s like Discord but made by a Chinese company
Due to quarantine, the Chinese government have pretty much shut down the borders. In order to stay in touch with family and friends, this app is the only source to communicate with them. Although there are apps that are accessible for Chinese International students to get in touch with their friends, there are many harsh requirements in order to use it. Due to the relationship between China and the U.S., the app is no longer available for people in the U.S to use. You must have a VPN to bypass your ip address back to China in order to use it. During times like this, I hope both countries can put down any conflict they have and provide a better source for their citizens to access. -

Non-classic Student in the Time of COVID-19
He was struck suddenly by the massage, a life changing massage which indeed deconstructs his unwanted college life but also his entire plan of how to waste it. The massage is, with years process, the approval of major change request, which he actually had expected a deny because of his junior status. Since it happened, he suddenly lost his plan about next school year and the summer vacation between. As an international student, he was planing a summer school which becomes unnecessary now, and he is not sure how to do exactly. The thing is almost all of his friends returned home either by airplane or automobile and he really has nothing to do in such pandemic. "I guess I should go home." he tells himself repeatedly and finally buys an airline ticket without clue if it would be canceled which is frequent in pandemic. Now all he can do is waiting, waiting for the eradication of last COVID-19 virus, waiting for the lovely first class next year, waiting for the familiar room home next month, waiting for the ticket confirmation next week, waiting for the confidence in final next time, waiting for the salute of professor next lecture, waiting for the oil boiling next meal, and waiting for the sunshine next morning. He is doubting if life must be passive, and suddenly wind strikes curtain; he choose to shut the window, and the street lamps outside are still on. -

Racism and Covid-19
The screen shot is group chat history on the app WeChat, between Chinese students who live in an apartment community in Santa Ana. One student is sharing his own experience with the others in the same apartment that he got attacked in the elevator by two white men. The two white men was very unhappy to be in the same elevator with the young Chinese man and said to him that Chinese people brought the corona virus to the US and they asked him to leave the US. The other students in the group chat supported him and said if something like this happen again he should ask for help in the group chat. -

2019 nCov and travel bans
The outbreak has made the relationship between China and the United States very tense. As an international student in the United States, I cannot buy a plane ticket back to China, and my friend who is going to study in the United States in China may not be able to successfully enroll in the fall semester. A few years ago, I thought globalization was a big trend and countries began to cooperate with each other in a friendly way. But now, everything seems to get changed. I would like to experience more of the beauty of different countries in the world and hope that the future can return to the era of globalization. -

Back of Chinese international student
When Covid-19 exploded all over the world, international students became desolate and frustrated. They could not go back to their motherland because of Covid-19. They had to stay to resist the virus and protect themselves. The Chinese embassy in the United States provided some face-masks, wipes, and some medicines to Chinese students in the US. The photo recorded how CSSA staff distributed these supplies to each student. They wearing protective clothing and goggles check everything was fine, which soothed the student's anxious mood under the situation of Covid-19. -
