Truth Serum
This is an Instagram post by namastou, and is partly in French. The comic posted in addition to the caption is by Ben Garrison, a political comic artist based in the United States. The comic shows how "truth" is being injected into "medical tyranny", and with that, the truth is that the masks are akin to making you slaves to the government, the vaccines cause gene alteration, and that PCR tests can come out as a false positive. -

Medical Tyranny
This is an Instagram post by namastou. This post is partly in French. The picture depicted are people part of the European Union signing a deal with Pfizer, one of the vaccine producers. The 2030 Agenda that is referenced is about the year 2030 being the year all the problems COVID has caused will be solved. An article is linked to this post in order to give more context to the 2030 Agenda and what it means for this comic. The conspiracy theories surrounding the 2030 Agenda also have to do with the New World Order, which has been a long-standing conspiracy theory even before the pandemic happened. -

The Pass Wars
This is an Instagram post by namastou. This post is partly in French, and it is a satire on Star Wars. The post references President Emanuel Macron, the current French president in the tags. It also uses the tag #plandemie, which is a French way of saying "plandemic", which is the belief that this pandemic was planned out by the rich in order to get richer and control their populace. They also say #liberté, or "liberty", possibly referring to their side being the side of freedom. #thegreatreset is another tag that is about the pandemic triggering a "great reset" where the rich have almost near control of the population through things like vaccine passports, which would limit freedom of movement if some refused to get the vaccine, thus creating discrimination between the vaccinated and unvaccinated. -

Pfizer Loyalty Card
This is an Instagram post by 4kron2. This user posted few tags, but the picture does give a lot of information. There has been a controversy on if booster shots are even needed, with some believing that this is a ploy by Big Pharma to get more money from the pandemic. This picture is a parody of loyalty cards some places have where if you buy a certain product or service enough times, you will get a reward. -

Repetition of Plagues
HIST30060 - submitted as part of a history assessment. Many of the memes, like this one, comment on the cyclical nature of history and the inescapability of the repetition of disasters. By drawing attention to other plagues of the past - all of which occurred during the 20s of their respective centuries - the image preempts the current ‘plague’ or pandemic. The accompanying image taken from the 2014 film ‘Big Hero 6’ and the comment ‘I have some concerns’ (an understatement to say the least) add an amusing note to the alarming message. Much of the humour found in these memes and images contained words ‘read’ in a deadpan or resigned tone - or otherwise the voice of one who is no longer surprised by the current turn of events. Again, there is a resounding feeling that this year has been a strain as one disaster after another occurs. -

satirical social commentary on state border closures and restrictions.
This satirical article by the Betoota Advocate is a social commentary on varying experiences of the coronavirus pandemic in different Australian states, specifically Victoria and Queensland, which speaks to my own experiences as someone who has lived in both states during Melbourne's second lockdown from July. The article mentions the general indifference or lack of sympathy towards Victorians, as NewsCorp and the general public have seen the second wave of cases in the southern state as being their own fault. This is something I noticed upon my return to Queensland in August, where the general rhetoric surrounding Victoria and their Premier Daniel Andrews' handling of the high number of cases in the state tended to be divisive. I had never heard of the term 'Dictator Dan' before returning to Queensland and people I knew were calling Victorians 'Mexicans', which I put down to the monopolisation that Murdoch media has over Queensland news. I saw these sentiments turn to sympathy as stage 4 lockdown set in, as Queenslanders realised the negative effects lockdown was having on Victorians. This also differed from the indifference I noticed when I first came back to Queensland, where most people seemed to have forgotten what lockdown was like and were living like everything was back-to-normal. As someone who experienced both lockdowns in Melbourne, as well as relatively normal life in Queensland, I definitely did not take the ability to travel, go out and see friends and family for granted, whilst also retaining deep sympathy towards everyone still in lockdown in Melbourne (which included many of my friends and some family). Humans Don't Avoid It Like The Plague
Throughout the pandemic, we have learned that some humans refuse to take precautionary measures to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The government refused acknowledge the problem we had until it was too late. Even when quarantine went into effect, people didn't wear masks or stop gathering in groups. As a whole, humans did a terrible job at avoiding COVID and that is why this tweet is so important. -

Coronavirus shoppers
This comic shows how much of an impact the coronavirus had on grocery stores and shoppers. It also shows how people could have overreacted to the fact that they can't find toilet paper or foods like spaghetti sauce. The main focus of this comic though is the doctor who is looking at the other row of shelves. The shelves are labeled, "face masks," "test kits," and "ventilators." This shows how not only food was a shortage, but also very important medical supplies that were needed to keep people alive. This is important to me because it shows the different struggles between everyday necessities, and what people need to stay alive. -

The Onion Reports that Nation Close to Getting Videoconferencing Software to Work
The Onion has been having a field day with the unbelievable times we are living through. They are doing a great job making fun of what is happening and our reaction to it. This article, written as we had to make an overnight change to working remotely and homeschooling, makes us laugh at how we struggled to get the videoconferencing software to work. People across America were all saying in union, "Can you hear me?" "Can you see me?" and "I don't know how to fix it." -

" Tired of Homeschooling? Betsy DeVos Suggests Letting Your Kid Die"
As the United States continues to experience record breaking numbers of new coronavirus cases, the Trump Administration is pushing for schools to reopen. Reductress, a feminist satire news website, offers a dark humor take on the push to reopen schools. In this satirical article, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is fictitiously quoted as saying "I don’t want you to think we’re going to lose all the kids, or that I don’t care about kids dying. I just think over 14,000 kids dying isn’t that big of a deal, and on the bright side that’s like 28,000 parents who no longer have to deal with homeschooling!” Relying on morbid humor, this article underscores the fear that reopening schools will lead to mass illness, hospitalization, and death. -

Who wants to be a quarantin-a-aire?
There was a show on TV called Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? It was a quiz show with relatively easy questions. This meme mimics the show and asks what the scariest part of 2020 is. The choices are murder hornets, Covid-19, toilet paper, or Carole Baskin, who ran an "big cat" animal sanctuary and had a reality show play during the beginning of the quarantine. You can see that the constant is having trouble deciding. -

City Enters Phase 4 of Pretending Coronavirus is Over
Back in March and April, governors juggled simultaneous stay-at-home orders and subsequent re-opening plans to minimize the dual threats of COVID-19 and economic recession. Reopening plans came with phases; Each phase had specific numbers that had to be met, such as percent decline in new cases, an r0 below 1, and especially increased testing capabilities. A horrific and cruel pattern of inaction emerged, and by the time May rolled around, many states were unable to meet even the earliest guidelines to begin reopening. After squandering precious time to fight the virus, many governments-- included in states like Florida and Arizona-- reopened the economy, declaring the pandemic over and the economy booming. As of today, June 22nd, Florida has over 100,000 COVID cases and Arizona just over 50,000. Both states have reported single day increases of over 3,000 and rank among some of the worst coronavirus hot spots in the world. This screenshot of an Onion article uses satire and dark humor to capture this tragedy. If governors like Ron DeSantis and Doug Ducey had taken the threat of COVID seriously and followed the guidelines for reopening, they could have saved tens of thousands of lives. If President Donald Trump had used his power to manufacture more tests or PPE, he could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives. Instead, our leaders failed us, manipulating the numbers or ignoring the numbers altogether, simply proclaiming the pandemic over because they wished it to be so. This satirical article would almost be funny, but it's not. It's not funny. It's infuriating, heartbreaking, macabre; It's so many things but none of them make me feel like laughing. -

"NYPD Officer Hopes Black Teen Only Coughing Because He Just Choked Him"
While the pandemic remains at the forefront of news coverage, in the beginning of May, a string of high profile murders made national news. In addition to the murder of Black jogger Ahmaud Arbery and a series of police shootings in Indianapolis that left three people dead just hours apart, reports from New York show that social distancing arrests have overwhelmingly and disproportionately impacted Black New Yorkers. This satirical article from the Onion, perhaps America's most well known satirical paper, uses dark and gratuitous satire to criticize police brutality in the time of COVID. Perhaps the most devastating line in the entire article is a quote from a fictional officer who says, "I promised my wife and kids that until this pandemic is behind us, I would just shoot black teens from a safe distance." -
