Empty Rockefeller Center
During the height of Covid, when New York City first went into lockdown, it was surreal to say the least. I think the last time the city was so empty and void of life was 9/11, so to see it again in 2020 really highlighted just how severe the situation was. Two of my sisters, who are a nurse and hospital manager, talked about being in the city for work, and practically being the only ones working in person, and it feeling like some kind of post apocalyptic movie. I remember around May of 2020, I helped my other sister move out of her dorms at #NYU, and it took about 15-20 mins to get to the bottom of Manhattan (Union Square) from The Bronx, due to the lack of fellow cars on the road. To see such a highly populated and lively city such as NYC turn into a ghost town almost overnight was something of a shock. It was one thing to see photos, and speak on how insane the situation was, but to actually be in the heart of Manhattan at this time was… well scary. So, seeing such a busy area such as Rockefeller center be completely empty is insane to say the least, and brings up a sad reminder of just how bad things were in the initial stages of the pandemic. -

My Mom Working in the COVID ICU
While this is not me, it is still important to me since it is my mom. She has worked in the COVID ICU almost the entire time, and I was really affected by seeing her gowned up like that the first time. Her career during my lifetime has not required so much PPE, so it was a really surreal moment that forced me to really appreciate the extremity of the pandemic and how much danger my mom was in. -

Unimaginable Grief
[March 2020] A month in time no one would ever want to go back to. My friend and I were enjoying our day and suddenly got news that campus will be closed until further notice. It was a scary and confusing moment; before you knew it everyone was talking about the virus. We definitely underestimated the virus and saw it spread in the blink of an eye. Slowly but surely we all began to realize how serious this was and prayed day and night for it to end. Cities went on lockdown, thousands became unemployed, and families grieved the loss of loved ones suddenly taken by this evil virus. I am so fortunate enough to have my close family and friends here with me today, but that does not mean these last one and a half years did not take a toll on me mentally. We've lost many loving family friends whom we never expected to lose this early. One thing the pandemic, thankfully, taught me is to appreciate those who you love because you do not know when they can be taken away from you. As hard as this experience was, I am grateful for the ups and downs and pray for the beautiful souls lost. Rest In Peace <3 -

Spredaing Pandemic
It was a late September night, the sky dark as coal. I was eating a delicious dinner of spaghetti al carbonara with my family when my father told us some scary news. The son of my grandfather's friend had fallen ill and died at the hands of COVID. I did not know this friend or his son at all, however, the fact that it could kill a perfectly healthy, young man really struck me hard, ad I'm beginning to see why my mother won't let me go to school. My father and grandfather attended the funeral, and I was left to think about how serious this pandemic really was. -

Testing Positive
My sister tested positive for COVID and everything in our house went down on lockdown. She was only sick for a day and no one else got sick. This is this scary virus that is killing people by the thousands. If your young its no problem but I will say be weary if your older. -

Covid-19
My story is that we had to change our whole lives because of this. With online school, no toilet paper, masks, social distance, and so many more protocols. This year has been the craziest year in a while and I'm only thirteen. We had to quarantine ourselves away from others for so long that when I finally started seeing my friends again it was like I hadn't seen them in like 8 months. Through all these months the only people I was able to be around was my family. Don't even get me started on not being able to see my grandparents. Because they were at higher risk in never saw them like once for so long and I would normally talk with them all the time but I couldn't. -

Corona finally striking too close to home
Ever since the pandemic has started, nobody I knew as had been seriously close to death because of the virus. That all changed last night. For the first time of 2020 I am afraid for life of a loved one. The virus never felt super real sine I hadn't had any true experiences with it and now it feels like my it has a grip in my life and I'm afraid that it'll never truly let go. Only time will tell in this situation and that may be the scariest part of it all. -

NYC Ghost Town
When people think of NYC, they think of how crowded and busy it is. To walk down the streets of NY, especially Times Square, and see nothing short of a ghost town, is a scary site. It almost reminds me of something out of a movie, more specifically the movie “I Am Legend.” Who knows the next time you’ll ever see an empty street in NYC like this again. -

The COVID-19 Experience of a High School Student
I chose an image of a clock and of a student working. If there is one thing I have learned during this pandemic, it is that I have a lot of time. I have been utilizing this time to exercise more, study for longer periods of time and also just to enjoy myself. The image of the student represents the amount of work that I have had to do online. School has been completely different with the online work rather than going to school five days a week in real life. These two items represent two of the most important factors of my pandemic experience. -
