Hoping for herd immunity
During covid my wife and I feel we are very lucky to be senior citizens. We are able to stay at home for long periods of time. We were able to get vaccinated early. We do not have to worry about our jobs or businesses. Our children are grown up, safe and vaccinated. We were able to have time to cook and clean our house ourselves. We watched with horror as people who could not get vaccinated died. Then we watched with horror as people who were able to get vaccinated and chose not to, died unnecessarily, whether for political reasons, fear, or misguided individualism. We grew up with many vaccinations. I made a list -- smallpox, measles, mumps, german measles, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, pneumonia, seasonal flu, shingles, also yellow fever (required in 70s) and cholera for traveling. It is astounding to me how a percentage of our population does not get vaccinated. Some of the military has apparently declined covid vaccination, but 100%of them received a mandatory batch of vaccines when they enlisted – it is difficult to understand that logic. My hope for the future is that we can get to 80% covid vaccinated in the USA. Experts speculate that may be the herd immunity threshold. More hopes are that the rich western world can vaccinate the poor parts of the world quickly to save lives there and to prevent newer covid mutations. And final hopes are that we can fully return to the full life we so enjoyed in Santa Monica before covid. -

IMMY Labs offers POD to help distribute Oklahoma vaccinations
IMMY Labs is a local company in my area that had previously offered free COVID testing to Oklahomans. Starting last week IMMY Labs created a POD at the Embassy Suites in Norman, Oklahoma. This offered senior citizens and healthcare workers the opportunity to receive the Pfizer vaccine and automatically sign up for the follow up vaccination. The POD is processing approximately 1200 people a day. Before many people in my area were driving up to 150 or more miles, roundtrip, to try to get vaccines. This has greatly improved availability for the elderly in my area. -

Senior Citizen Hours at Grocery Stores Poster
During the pandemic, not only were we faced with empty grocery store shelves, but there were lines around the block to get into a store. This was difficult at best, and scary to many of us, making us wonder if this was a sign of the collapse of our way of life. Soon, most stores offered "senior hours" which allowed the older citizens to shop early without waiting in the lines and with less people in the store, thus reducing the risk of contagion. This is a flyer the town of Glendale, California put out to inform those who needed to shop early. -

Our Life
My husband and I are in our 80’s and sequestered at home. We are very fortunate that we can enjoy every day as we have in the past. Spring has arrived and we see the flowers and flowering trees, birds and their songs, and the animals. Our children and grandchildren are safe. What a beautiful world we have. But then there is the ugly Corona virus world. I get angry because the people in charge did nothing to prepare us when it was detected in January. The health care workers and others helping people like me are on the front lines without protective gear or testing. I saw a doctor on TV who talked about a family who said goodbye to their loved one over FaceTime because of necessary isolation. Your heart goes out to the rest of the world as we are all in it together. Whatever happens in all the world, flowers will bloom and birds will sing, and the sun will still come up in the morning. -
