Voices for Ethnic & Multicultural Awareness (VEMA) Gathered to Honor Estavon Elioff and Eddie Uti
Voices for Ethnic & Multicultural Awareness (VEMA) and community members gathered to honor the lives of Estavon Elioff and Eddie Uti from the Iron Range region of Minnesota. Elioff was a 19-year-old Latinx male who was shot and killed while unarmed by Sheriff's deputies in Mountain Iron, MN last year. There is an active investigation into his death by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Eddie Uti was a 29-year-old Samoan father of two from Hibbing, MN found dead in 2020. His last known contact was with the Itasca Sheriff's department. A medical examiner’s report revealed he died from a drowning after being “found floating near the shore of Pokegama Lake.” -

100 Activists Opposing the Pipeling
Last month, it was reported by Healing Minnesota and The Intercept, that the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office requested that Enbridge reimburse them for nearly $72,000 worth of riot gear and more than $10,000 in weapons and ammunition, including tear gas, batons, pepper spray, bean bag rounds, and flash-bang devices. These items were identified as necessary PPE to "maintain peace in and around Line 3's construction site." Security Changes in Maricopa County Jails in Light of Covid-19
This is a press release that was published in March, right at the time when the US was really starting to get hit with the pandemic. At the time this was published, there were no confirmed cases of the virus in the jails, but the Sheriff's office began increasing security and limiting access in an attempt to prevent the spread of the virus within the jail population. Even at the beginning, it was evident that this would not be a flash in the pan type incident but a long lasting event that would require rethinking the 'everyday normal' to keep people safe and healthy. -

Solano County Sheriffs Department mandates lock-down over protests
My county was given stay-at-home orders as peaceful day-time protesting was infiltrated by looters and violence at night. I listened to the police scanner as reports of our stores being looted and burned down came in. Several stores including Walmart, CVS, Best Buy, BevMo and MiMi's Cafe were damaged and looted. There were not enough police to cover the unrest. Once the looters moved to another building the police had to abandon the newly secured building, leaving it again open for looting. The unrest lasted until sunrise. I got no sleep that night. We were worried the looting would find its way into residential streets. The next day the national guard came in. My town is no longer small. We have become one of the most affordable cities to live in the San Francisco Bay Area and we have grown so fast, but the small town feeling still lingers in its older residents like me. We have never had the National Guard here. The next morning my family packed our car up with cleaning supplies and drove to Old Town to see if there was anything we could help clean up. Luckily only larger businesses were targeted. People were so angered by the looting and were very vocal about it. I was afraid that night but I understand the looting. The looters were not there because of the George Floyd, they were there because of opportunity and generational poverty. People who have opportunity don't loot. This was kids like my students. Kids who the system works against every single day. If they could get away with a few pair of new shoes to sell and get ahead why not? I'm not mad. These systems are strong. Companies like Walmart profit off of the labor an poverty of their employees every single day. I'm not mad that they were targeted. -

7 Sex Offenders Released Early Due to COVID-19 in Orange County Despite Parole Violations
In an effort to slow the spread of Covid-19 inside the nation's correctional facilities a small percentage of inmates have been released early or have been released to house arrest. The thought behind this action is to lessen the number of people inside the facilities allowing more space for social distancing and/or to not expose inmates to a possible death sentence if they were to contract covid and not recover. Though officials have promised not to free any inmate that poses a public safety risk stories like this one appear all over the country. This article states that seven sex offenders, who had served their original sentences but had returned to jail for parole violations, were released early from the Orange County Jail in California. The article was edited a day later to include a statement from the sheriff stating these individuals were not release early but were released by court order.
