WHO Warns About the Dangers of Health Misinformation as Musk Takes Over Twitter
This is a news story from Bloomberg News by Andy Hoffman and Clara Hernanz Lizarraga. Since Elon Musk has officially acquired Twitter, it has prompted groups like the World Health Organization to give warnings on COVID misinformation. Mike Ryan, the executive director of the health emergencies program at the WHO issued a statement on Musk buying Twitter for $44 billion dollars. “When anyone reaches a position in life where they have so much influence over the way information is shared with communities, they take on a huge responsibility,” Ryan said at the media briefing in Geneva. “We wish Mr. Musk luck with his endeavors to improve the quality of information we all receive.” Throughout the pandemic, the WHO has worked to make sure correct information about the pandemic and vaccines are being spread. The WHO has an overall fear now that bad information could be spread more easily about COVID and possibly cause more death. -

Bike Trail Pandemic Safety
This is a picture of a sign to “Please Wear A Mask” by one of the entrances of to my hometown’s bike path. Originally a local place by the local lake to take family and have a nice picnic, go on a brisk walk, or have a fun ride on your bike, the trail is a place where most locals congregate. Due to COVID-19, this local spot has grown a lot of attraction because when people have nothing else to do, they take up nature as their past time. However, this sign was placed to remind people that the pandemic is still real and all around us, and that people should still stay safe while partaking in a fun past time. Having these warnings out in public spaces help people keep a sense of mindfulness of others as they continue on their own endeavors of their day to day lives as we all try to live though a pandemic that has shaken the core of how people do live. -

Warning Signs
Since this semester is all online, I have been living at home in NH instead of at school in Boston. Since this is the case, I am able to continue working where I was at over the summer in VT. At the beginning of the pandemic when you would cross into VT you would see one of those big orange construction signs stating that if you come to visit VT you should quarantine for fourteen days at home. Alongside the sign would be someone in a DOT truck watching the traffic. Sometime between yesterday, November 17th, 2020, and today, November 18th, 2020, the state of Vermont added these permanent signs at all the crossings in and out of the state. It really brings together how much of a lasting impact this virus has had on the world and that this is something that is not going anywhere anytime soon. -

Government Officials Send Coronavirus Safety Tips via Text Message
Yesterday, late in the afternoon, I received two text messages which appear to come from Austin, Texas officials warning me of the increase spread of coronavirus in the area and encouraging me to take precations. They also encouraged people staying home and enjoying the upcoming fourth of July holiday with only their household members. After receiving these two text messages, in both English and Spanish, I also received a phone call with a recorded message expressing similar things. It should also be noted that I do not live in Austin or Travis County. I'm in the suburb of Leander in Williamson County. -

BookOff: No Standing and Reading
BookOff is Japan's largest chain of used bookstores. For several weeks in April to May 2020, many if not all locations were closed. As of May 22, I noticed this one had reopened. A sign posted reads, roughly, "Please: To prevent the spread of novel coronavirus, standing and reading is forbidden. We ask your understanding and cooperation." お願い:新型コロナウイルス感染拡大防止のため立ち読み禁止。ご理解・ご協力お願いします。 -

Navigating Pandemic Conspiracies: Burger King Warning
This project aims to document all of the different conspiracies and their growth and treatment by the media throughout the pandemic. This is the headline of an article describing how Burger King issued a statement warning people not to drink bleach after a statement issued by the president. This is not fake news, but I decided to include it in this series because it demonstrates how hard it can get to navigate fake news and conspiracies, especially when the real news sometimes sounds fake. -

If you can stay home, you must stay home. If you don't, people will die.
I have the VicEmergency app on my phone to warn for bushfires. Around mid March, I started getting daily warning alerts from the app, initially for contagious disease in my area, and then for pandemic in my area. The alerts usually come between 5-6pm and provide information on the latest public health advice and restrictions. On Friday 27 March the alert from the app was particularly striking. One of the instructions, highlighted in bold, told people "If you can stay home, you must stay home. If you don't, people will die." This felt like very dire warning from what is otherwise rather a dry app with very practical instructions. -
