Doctor's Testify at Senate Hearing on COVID-19 Racial Disparities Among Seniors
The U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging hears from doctors who discuss the racial health disparities among seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The mortality rate for older African Americans is 3.6 times higher than for older white Americans. This racial health disparity is also apparent for Native American and Latino populations. Many of these people have no or little insurance and are in poverty, directly leading to poorer outcomes in their health and greater risk of dying from COVID-19. -

Several residents at a local assisted living and memory care home have tested positive for COVID-19. Four of those who tested positive have now died. It is not clear if the deaths were caused directly by COVID-19 or by comorbidities. -

Atypical symptoms caused by COVID-19 in seniors
Because of the differences in age, it seems some seniors are presenting with atypical symptoms for COVID-19. This is resulting in some difficultly in detection and treatment. Some are being brushed off as not needing immediate medical care and only taken to be tested after a spouse insisted they be taken to the hospital. In the hospital they tested positive for the virus. -

An Instagram post showing socially distanced marriage booths in Anaheim, CA.
NBC news on Instagram shares a photo of a couple waiting to get married at a socially distanced marriage booth in Anaheim, CA. Many weddings were postponed or cancelled as a result of the virus, but many couples have still gotten married in the face of it all. -

A meme about the stimulus checks.
This meme depicts Indiana Jones from the ride in Disneyland trying to shore up the economy with the $1200 stimulus check as it was first going out and not really being able to close the gap. Personally, I don't think the US government is doing enough to help people in perilous situations and a $1200 check doesn't really go that far for people who are low income, especially when people have to worry about healthcare, rent, and food. Many may have lost their jobs or cannot work due to being high risk and/or not being able to do their jobs online for various reasons. -

A photo of an empty Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and beach with associated responses on Reddit.
An image shared on the Santa Cruz, CA subreddit showing the beach in front of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on day 60 the Shelter in Place along with some responses to the photo. This beach is usually very busy, especially on weekends during summer, and usually full of tourists visiting the amusement park. Because this beach is so busy there is usually a lot of trash here in the sand. I used to live near this beach when I live in Santa Cruz, and it is very weird seeing it empty like this at a time when it should be busy. -

'Bar" trivia through Zoom
We used to do bar trivia in Redondo Beach, CA every Wednesday night. Now that everything is closed, the quizmaster, John, from King Trivia decided to do events through Zoom. It was surprisingly easy! The quizmaster would bring us all into a room of about 50 different screens (many were couples sharing a webcam). A couple people were in Australia and Costa Rica, which they wouldn't normally be able to do at an in-person trivia! Once all the questions were asked in the joint room, our teams were sent to our own 'breakout' rooms where we could discuss the questions and come up with answers. This night was also costume night so several people were dressed up, though by this point near the end of the game only a few of us still had our costumes on. We didn't win but we had a good time! -

A couple who had to cancel their anniversary plans spend it recreating wedding photos in Animal Crossing instead
A user shared a screenshot of a wedding photo they recreated in Animal Crossing on the reddit.com/r/AnimalCrossing subreddit. The virus canceled a lot of plans for people and people are finding new and innovative ways to still have a celebration of the event in the safety of their own homes. Video games have been a good resource for socializing safely for those able to access them. -

A flyer shared on the Los Angeles subreddit stating their area is high risk for COVID-19.
This is a flyer that seems to have been passed out in the Westlake and Pico Union neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Currently these neighborhoods have the highest death counts for LA County. Many of these people are lower socioeconomic status and non-white. Many of them have front lines jobs that cannot be done from home and live in more crowded neighborhoods. -

Reflections in the game Animal Crossing about how they didn't think the virus would still be a problem 2 months down the line.
This is a screenshot of a Reddit.com/r/AnimalCrossing. In the game, players can send letters to their future selves. This person sent themselves a letter for 2 months after the beginning of quarantine, thinking it would be over by now. I think it really highlights how we weren't prepared for the virus, nor did a majority of people anticipate being under lockdown for this long. -

An photograph on Reddit showing downtown LA.
I've been interested in finding out how people are faring downtown Los Angeles, CA where there is a large homeless population. This image was shared on the r/losangeles subreddit of Reddit.com. It is striking to me because it shows how homeless are still out on the streets during the pandemic, making their rough situation even worse. -

A meme about how introverts and extroverts are handling the lockdown.
A meme shared in a Discord server about how extroverts are having a hard time handling the lockdown while introverts are doing alright. As an introvert my daily life hasn't changed too much aside from not being able to go out and do things occasionally. I don't mind staying at home at all while I have friends who are really struggling without being able to go out and socialize in person. -

A Twitter post suggesting use of an alternate term for self-isolation.
A Twitter post by user @Sarklor suggesting why we should say we've been 'exiled for the good of the realm' instead of saying we're self-isolating. I think this is a funny way to refer to self-isolation. Use of humor can also be a good way to get people to practice self-isolating when they would rather not. I think it fosters a community surrounding something we're all going through in our own bubbles. #HST580 #ASU #Twitter #Humor -

A Von's store in Redondo Beach with nearly empty shelves at the beginning of California's lockdown.
On a trip to the grocery store at the beginning of California's lockdown, the dairy section in a local Von's is almost wiped out. The majority of the store looked similar to this with empty shelves everywhere and slim pickings for essentials available. #HST580 #Arizona State University -
