Police in the U. S. killed three people per day in 2019, for a total of nearly 1,100 deaths
Police in the U. S. killed three people per day in 2019, for a total of nearly 1,100 deaths. Those numbers are far higher than in other western countries. In England and Wales, three people were shot and killed by police last year. Roughly as many people were killed over the past decade in those countries as were killed by police in the U.S. in an average week (19). Despite the large number of police killings every year, police are almost never charged for excessive force. Between 2013 and 2019, 99% of killings resulted in no charges, according to Mapping Police Violence. -

A New Look From Graduates
This picture resonated with me a little bit more than others I looked at because none of the kids in the pictures seem particularly happy. Most times graduation is the happiest day for a teen, but Covid-19 is making sure students are getting a shockingly different school experience this year. -

Dating During A Pandemic
For someone who is single, dating is a huge part of life and socialization. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed huge strain on this, begging the question, is it safe to date? First and foremost, the best advice is to do what is best for you, while taking into account the health and safety of others. If you are interested in dating during the pandemic, take the other person into account and see what they are most comfortable with. This could be as simple as wearing a mask if going out or having a date over zoom. The same ideology should be used when deciding on whether to be inanimate or not. Being safe is key, meaning dating in a pandemic is not impossible. -

Notes for Nurses
This is a photo from inside the COVID unit at St. Joseph's Hospital. Children all over the Phoenix area have been sending drawings and letters to the frontline workers, thanking and encouraging them to keep saving lives. The nurses on the unit have put them all over the windows and walls for everyone to see. -

A Trip to a Silent Hospital
On July 18th 2020 in the late afternoon, I started experiencing some concerning not Covid-related symptoms and I made the decision to go to the Emergency Room. I’ve had chronic health issues all my life, so this wasn’t an unfamiliar experience. However, I’d been isolating since March and I was terrified of having to potentially go into a situation that was unknown in the middle of the pandemic. The things I remember most about the visit are how utterly desolate the places in the hospital felt, and how silent it was. I’m used to packed waiting rooms and constant noise. This visit was very different. After a brief screening in a large, mostly empty lobby with large barriers and protective measures in place, they assessed that I was not a potential COVID patient and sent me to a waiting room that I was alone in for most of my visit. There was no real chatter, mostly just silence, broken by the TV. The silence continued even back into the ER, where it seemed that the staff was spread thin. The most notable sounds were occasional low conversations and the sounds of medical equipment being moved around and the beeps and pulses. Even when evaluating me, while warm, the conversations sounded more terse and to the point. Everything moved more quickly. In some ways, it felt like being in an abandoned building. Everything was dark, silent, and empty in the areas where I was. -

A Socially Distant Graduation
As I sat in my cap and gown, I thought back to my last actual school day. I had spent the day stressing about a statistics test, instead of enjoying time with my friends or thanking my teachers. When the announcement came that we would not return to school, I wished I could redo that day. Yet, I quickly realized that that day, like so many that followed, was a reminder not to take anything for granted and remember what is important. So as I sat with my classmates, I was not sad about the celebrations or goodbyes I missed; I was simply grateful. -
