Holiday Care Packages
Three years ago, COVID-19 barred many people from traveling back home, and my roommates and I were one of those people. We all came from American Samoa, and while we planned to return home for the summer, thanksgiving, and Christmas, we could not do that. I remember working a part-time job during school to save up just enough to pay for my roundtrip fare, but unfortunately, COVID changed that. Although we could not have the chance to return home for the holidays, our families made it possible to bring the taste of island snacks to St. George with the constant sending of care packages. The photo I uploaded showed one of the many care packages my family sent me from home, which meant a lot to me. My roommates and I were very homesick, but our families came through with the snacks from home. I remember eagerly checking and refreshing the USPS app to track my package. It became my favorite thing to do during the COVID shutdown. -

The U.S. Approves a Vaccine
The Food and Drug Administration authorized Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use on Friday, clearing the way for millions of highly vulnerable people to begin receiving inoculations within days. The authorization is a turning point in a pandemic that has taken more than 290,000 lives in the United States. With the decision, the United States becomes the sixth country — in addition to Britain, Bahrain, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Mexico — to clear the vaccine. Today, we ask the science and health reporter Donald G. McNeil Jr. what might happen next. -

Santa to the rescue
This holiday, we were on an emergency stay at home order. Solano County advised that all gatherings should cease. Meaning that our holiday was unfortunately canceled. My family has been working hard to adhere to the rules and orders, but we are all feeling a little exhausted from it all. I especially wanted to visit my parents in Oregon. Originally, we were thinking of getting tested for Covid right before we headed up to Oregon. But my mom being a medical worker did not feel that she could guarantee our safety. So for a little change in our routines, we made hot cocoa at home and filled up our new mugs. We got warm and cozy (All in our jammies and hats) and piled into the car with blankets. Then we drove to a local neighborhood that is well known for its holiday spirit. The locals call these streets Lollypop Lane, and it adjoins with a road we call Candy Cane Lane. We just cruised in a big loop listening to Christmas music for hours. Whatever, the kids were happy and we felt like we were doing something out of the ordinary for the first time in a long time. At one house, a man dressed as Santa yelled to the children in their cars and told them that he knew they had been good. It was sweet. All and all we went looking for Christmas lights every few days. -

Florist during the pandemic
John Mello runs a small local flower shop that has been providing flowers to the local community for years. When the pandemic hit, quarantine was a major adjustment for John’s business. Customers who regularly came in for celebratory gifts, flowers prom, and wedding flowers, no longer came in at their usual rate. As a result, John’s business slowed. This flower represents the fragile life of a local business, and how without the consistent type of attention it needs, like water and sunlight, it will die just as quickly as a flower. -

Middle Schooler during Covid-19
The coming of Covid-19 had a huge impact on not only me but everyone else. During Covid-19 Lockdown I wasn't able to go places and see and visit friends without being six feet or wearing a mask. I wasn't able to train for sports or have practices. I am still not able to go to school to get an education or even just see my best friends that I am used to seeing every day. I had to adapt to this strange way of life and had to figure out ways to do my everyday things. These are ways Covid-19 has impacted my life and ways I have adapted to it. -

Middle Schooler during Covid-19
Covid-19 coming into this world had a strong impact on me and a strong impact on the world. This is because I was not able to go outside to my favorite restaurants or around friends without staying 6 feet apart. I wasn't able to work out and train for sports. My learning ability got harder and harder every day because I wasn't able to go to school. During this hard time, I had to adapt to these struggles and figure different ways to do these things during these times. -

Making the Best of Unexpected Situations
Carolyn is someone who has been dreaming about her 21st birthday and had big plans for celebrating it as well, however the pandemic forced her to cancel those plans. However, we still made the best of the situation. During this interview I asked Carolyn a couple questions that I needed to be careful with how I phrased them. I related this back to the things we learned about ethical archives. When figuring out what I was going to ask Carolyn, I was careful to think about what affect the question might have on her. I didn’t want to ask questions too harsh or questions that were accusatory. This definitely limited the questions that I could ask but I also think it was very helpful to think of it prior to the interview and make adjustments accordingly. -

What Effect Does A Pandemic Have On A Relationship? (Corrected)
As this interview is part of a collection exploring relationships and the exploration of sexuality during the Covid-19 pandemic, I really wanted to get to know some more about what it’s like to have a relationship altered by the pandemic. Luckily, I knew just the people. I reached out to two of my best friends on campus and asked if they’d be willing to speak about their experiences, which they agreed to. I already had an interview set up with a friend who went through a whole relationship (began dating and broke up) during the pandemic, but I felt it was important to explore multiple different types of relationships. This interview to me shows something about my generation living under Covid, as it shows how many of us felt like we were stripped of the indepence we gained when we left for college, and how we now have to navigate living at home again. In the case of these two, they also have to navigate being intimate and romantic with each other in this situation. -

NY Nurse Receives 1st Dose of COVID vaccine in U.S.
This article shows the first coronavirus vaccine being given to a critical care nurse in NY. This is a huge milestone for the U.S. because it was the biggest effort to produce a vaccine in our history. This would be something for future historians to discover because it is so significant for the year of 2020. This has been a year of hardship for everyone and I think this vaccine is a glimmer of hope for many people. There are currently 3 million vaccinations being flown around the nation right now, hoping to help more people and save many lives. -

Working in a pandemic
This was an email sent out to employees about a coworker that had been infected with Covid-19. This is important because it shows that stores are now required to inform employees when another person that works there is confirmed to be covid positive. However, as this is a personal experience the company did not inform employees that there was a suspected case prior to the confirmation. This shows how money hungry corporations are even in a pandemic. They may say that they had the employee's best interest in mind but their actions speak louder, than a lousy email sent out. -

The page shows total reported Covid cases of Pregnant women in the U.S. which is currently at 44,183. Along with the total deaths which is at 57 currently. It also provides other graphs and statistics on this demographic. This is very important data that historians can once day use when studying this time period. -

Thanksgiving during a pandemic
This thanksgiving was not like another. For the first time in a while, we spent this THanksgiving under a lockdown due to Covid-19. Although we were locked down my family and I traveled to Florida to visit our grandparents because everything gets worse. Since we traveled it made it feel a little bit more like Thanksgiving but not entirely. We had a lot of delicious food that everyone helped make. Everything tasted so good and I was so full after. After we ate we all sat around and talked for a while. But, my siblings and I had to clean up and do all the dishes because the adult’s job was cooking and we had to clean. Later after some time had passed everyone started to go home, but my siblings and I really wanted to get an early start on the Black Friday deals. We all got in the car and drove to target. When we showed up at target we were shocked to find that it was closed. All the shops had closed early because of the curfew. We all thought this was crazy. Since target was closed we all just decided to go home and go to bed. It was a great Thanksgiving but everything still felt very weird. -

My 2020 Thanksgiving
This Thanksgiving of the year 2020, was different among all of my Thanksgivings in many ways. My family and I did not have our usually gathering this year. My grandparents were not able to due to COVID-19 the global pandemic, we did not want to put them at any risk. It also did not really feel like Thanksgiving at all, since we were not in school in person, I still cannot believe we have been doing school online since March! Wow how time has flied by. This year it was really hard for me to get into the fall spirit, yes I carved pumpkins, made pumpkin pie, and drank many iced pumpkin spiced lattes from Starbucks, nothing made it feel like Thanksgiving. Growing up I have always craved that feeling of leaving school, walking out those doors, knowing your not going to go back for a week. Oh how amazing that feels. But this year, that never happened. All I had to do to leave school was close my laptop, that's it. I was already at home, nothing had changed. Even though we did not to anything jurastically different it still did not feel like Thanksgiving, not even one bit. I never ever in a million years thought I would say this, but, I miss school, I want to go back so bad. I can not wait, I can not wait. To whoever is reading this probably years from now, please never take anything for granted, not even toilet paper. Yeah, toilet paper, it was impossible to find it anywhere, and even if you did, it was really bad, like worse than public restroom bad. Well, anyways Thanksgiving 2020 was a total bust and I can not wait for the day to come when everything goes back to normal, no more limits on how many people can enter a store at a time, no more temperature checks, getting to eat inside at restaurants! Never thought that would be something I would not be able to do, and the thing I know we all want most, is no more face masks. Yes, we have to wear face masks these little peices of paper that we wear on our face that cover our nose and mouth to help us maybe not get the virus. Half of my 8th grade year is gone already, and oh boy, I can't wait to go back to normal, I just really can't wait. -

The Daily Numbers, No More Beds
Since October, I religiously check the daily case rate everyday at 12:30 when my distance learning class breaks for lunch. Originally, I checked in outrage, as I watched the local numbers climb, while simultaneously hearing our school administrators claim our school of 2500 was “safe to open.” After Halloween, I spent a tense November planning to take a leave because there was no way I was risking my family to continue to teach in person but still over Zoom, unable to walk around, with kids unable to work in a capacity beyond their chrome books. Me, exposing myself unnecessarily to the virus inside my classroom with students, but teaching exactly as I would for distance learning, for the political facade that things are “normal.” 20 people dying a day in this county is not normal. These daily numbers climbing confirmed to me my gut instinct was right. Our school ended up having our re-opening cancelled by the state when our area moved into the most restrictive tier at the end of November. I had mixed feelings of relief, horror, and deep sadness. The day we hit 700 cases a day, I was in shock. When we crossed 1000, I was horrified. Last week, when we hit 2000 cases a day, I was in terror. Today and yesterday, we have reached over 3000 new cases a day, and there are now 0% ICU beds available in our county. I feel nothing but numb. Numb and exasperated that people here are still refusing to wear masks and still think going out is more important than the safety of our community. Oh, but don’t worry. My school still thinks it’s safe to open. -

COVID Thanksgiving
My family’s thanksgiving dinner wasn’t that much different than our other thanksgiving dinners. My family isn’t a big believer in COVID 19 because honestly it's just a flu. So, we envied our family, only one part of the family didn’t come because they are crazy COVID cautious. Other than that it was realistically normal. It was more relaxed than usual but it was nice. Covid is real but the response to it is worse than the sickness. I hope the other generations don’t have to deal with the government we have right now in California. -

Thanksgiving in 2020 during a PANDEMIC
The thanksgiving of 2020 is far different from every year. Due to the COVID 19 outbreak, I was not able to see my family over seas or my cousins. Spending Thanksgiving with my cousins and grandparents is one of my favorite things but I could not do that this year. So this year I stayed home and had thanksgiving with just my family. My mom, dad, brother, my other brother, and sister were all their. All the food was the same. We had turkey, ham, masked potatoes, gravey, green beans, mac n cheese, stuffing, corn, rolls, pumpkin pie, apple pie, and vanilla ice cream. After we ate food, we played board games and then went in my pool and lastly played basketball on the court in my backyard. Which was really fun. Overall, I think that I had a great COVID thanksgiving at home even though it was not the same as past years. -

My Covid-Thanksgiving
The year 2020 has been a very strange year, and my families Thanksgiving experience was an odd one. Since we couldn't have a large family dinner, we ended up bringing food to both of my grandparents. I was really bummed to not be able to spend quality time with them, but I was still glad to get the opportunity to see them. After we left our grandparents, we went to our cousin's beach house. We were scrambling throughout the city trying to find an open restaurant for our Thanksgiving dinner. None of the restaurants were open, but we luckily got a call from our friend to have our Thanksgiving meal with them. The lesson I learned from this day was that having close family and friends really matters and that they can get you out of any tough situation. Overall, my Thanksgiving during the pandemic was not an ideal one, but it was still a blessing to be able to be with my family and friends nonetheless. -

Thanksgiving during Covid
My thanksgiving was very different because we didn't have a lot of people over. The thing that was the same was we went to my grandparent's house. The preparation was fine we ate mac and cheese, mash potatoes and turkey and a lot of pie. I had thanksgiving with my family. We don't travel for Thanksgiving. -

The Great Downtime
The reason the object is the bed, because, during this epidemic we have had a lot of free time or in other words down time. During this down time i have been laying in bed a lot, or on my couch or in a chair. The reason this bed is important to me, is because, i like to look on the bright side of Corona. We got a break off of Sports, and school. Sometimes that's what we need. -

Thanksgiving 2020
This year's thanksgiving was not very different from other years. The only difference was that my mom's sister and her family did not come due to COVID-19. Everything else was the same. We had turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and Martinelli's. It didn't seem all that different this year. -

Thanksgiving During Covid
This year 2020 is the year of the pandemic. Many people are traveling to other states to be with their family, which I feel is foolish of them, because not only are they endangering themselves, but their relatives. However, I do understand they want to be with their family for the holiday. I can't relate with those people because I never celebrate Thanksgiving with my entire family. I have relatives whom I never even met on the other side of the world. My Thanksgiving did not feel different from any typical year because my family did not follow common traditions, since we are Chinese. My mom just bought a plain turkey from Sprouts, which my grandparents turned into a spicy dish. But the main course wasn't the turkey, it was the delicious fish and tomato soup I helped prepare with my grandparents. The day felt normal because we never had an extravagant dinner. We only had three dishes. None of my parents cooked, instead, my grandparents did. Although my Thanksgiving was still the same, I believe some other people's thanksgiving changed. At the dinner table, we could have three or six people present, so the Covid-19 indoor capacity limitations didn't affect us at all. I didn't care much about Thanksgiving, since it wasn't my number one favorite holiday. It just felt like a regular dinner with dessert. However, I'm glad the pandemic hasn't changed everything. -

Thanksgiving 2020
The Thanksgiving that I had in 2020 was in some ways different, and some ways the same. I would normally go to my Grandparents house, and they would invite family and friends over too. But this year, only my family was invited. My grandfather had also passed away in October, so only my grandmother was there. The food was the same, but the company was very different. It felt more lonely this year, because of the lockdown. My Thanksgiving was different in some ways, but familiar in other ways. Overall, it was a fine experience, but obviously not as good as previous years. -

Covid-19
It was the night before March 13, 2020, and I was in my room listening to music; when my mom got an email saying that we were going to be doing online school for two weeks. I was really excited to not have to go to school, and that I got to stay at home. I wasn't shocked because people at my school had been talking about us having to stay at home, but I definitely can say that I wasn't really aware of what about to happen. The next day at school we were just going over how online school was gonna work, and our new schedule and whatnot. The following week was our first week of online school, and I'd say most people like myself enjoyed it. I was glad that I didn't have to wake up early, and I got to stay in sweatpants all day. The funny thing about lockdown is that nobody really knew how long we were going to be doing it. We thought it was really only going to be about 2 weeks. Soon after we finished our second week of online school, we got another email saying that we would be doing school from home for longer than we expected. Throughout April, everyone started to become really bored at home, and nobody could go out because all the stores were closed. Most people rarely even went to the supermarket. I was extremely bored, and spent most days doing nothing after school was over. Lots of people also started to get sick of zoom and I'd say about more than half the school was started to get annoyed with online school, including me. The only interesting thing to do was watch tv, and the amount of quarantine memes was getting to be a lot. Soon after April, everyone thought that we'd be going back in may, but sadly we didn't and the following month of quarantine was really when people started losing their minds. Everyone was so sick of lockdown, and literally did nothing all day long. I found myself just watching tiktok's and YouTube 24/7. The following month of June people were even more bored but luckily things started to open up again like clothing stores, restaurants, even the mall. I just assumed that quarantine was over, and that things would go back to normal. Until, a few weeks later when they started closing things back up in L.A.(which is where I live). The worst part is that we were supposed to be going back to school in August, and now everyone was concerned that it wasn't going to happen. A few days before school started we were notified that we sadly weren't going back on campus. We all were sad, but we just assumed that we'd be going back after halloween, or the election (neither of them happened). I was so incredibly bored and honestly really confused about life in general. In the first 3 months of school. I hated online learning, and I had lost all of my social skills, and I had literally run out of things to watch on tv. Finally, a few days after the election my mom got an email that we were going back to school. I was excited to be going back, but also nervous. My school had started thing about a month earlier called wellness camps where we would go on Wednesday with our class and so some activities with our classmates just for an hour. Even just then, it felt super awkward to be back at school, so at this point nobody even knew how to talk to each other since it had been so long since we'd seen people from school. It's currently mid-december and we are going back soon. I hope things will get better soon:) -

Media Impact on Outcomes of Criminal Court Cases
This is important because it shows that media has an effect on outcomes in a lot of criminal court cases. We need to be aware of how media affected some of the most famous cases in the United States.
