Mayans and Covid-19
The topic of Language & Communication during the Covid-19 pandemic stood out to me because my father was from Guatemala, and I am of Mayan descent. I recently read an article from last year discussing the impact of Covid-19 on indigenous communities, especially the Mayans. The article mentions how certain problems were exacerbated by the pandemic: for example, the inability to effectively communicate the pandemic situation across many dialects. Despite a variety of struggles, the article highlights several benefits that Mayan communities experienced, including a renewed sense of community, culture, and farming. -

A look at powerful social justice moments this year
Many photographs in this article show a beautiful moment within the context of the Black Lives Matter Movement. Some photographs show other events marked by the year 2020 such as the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the anniversary of women having the right to vote. If anything, 2020 was the most volatile year most of us have ever witnessed in our lives. -

Sophia's Pandemic Journey
I was at School and people were taking about the how the school was going to close and we are going to be able to stay home for two weeks longer after ski week. I went home and we saw on the news that there was a virus spreading all around the world and the first thing we did was go to the grocery store now so that we wouldn't have to go later if things get worse. We stayed home for awhile and my family is high risk so we were very careful and wore our masks everywhere and couldn't see our friends. But I didn't have that bad of a time during the pandemic because I felt lonely sometimes but I trusted in God in everything I did and do. And is since I trusted God me and my family got through the pandemic safely. -

An 8th grader's Christmas in Covid
My Christmas this year did not feel right. Every year, I look forward to Christmas break from school and every year there is some sort of party or celebration for it. This year I had online school so the entire time I was just sitting at home, by my desk. The week of Christmas, it didn't feel like Christmas. We normally don't go anywhere for Christmas but it still felt different. We still held the same traditions as every year but the initial excitement was gone. School really does impact Christmas. -

Fall Semester Admist a Global Pandemic
I am a student enrolled in Northeaster's first semester freshmen year study abroad program. As a member of the NU IN program I was originally going to be in Prague for this semester but due to the pandemic caused by Covid-19 that site was shut down. I ended up "studying abroad" 15 mins down the street from Northeastern at the Westin in Copley plaza. Living in a hotel for the first semester of college was a very different experience than what I was expecting; however, the nice hotel wasn't the only standout of the semester. As a result of the pandemic all of my classes, like almost every of student, were conducted over zoom. Some of my professors were not even in the United States, but were teaching me virtually from London. The social aspect of college also presented its own new challenges as students had to limit capacity in common spaces, social distance, and of course wear masks. While this new aspect of college was difficult to get used to, after a month or so I got the hang of it. I got into a rhythm of taking classes in the hotel but still going to campus and getting out to explore the city with new friends. As a matter of fact living of campus first semester was great because I was better able to explore more parts of the city. While i have no doubt studying abroad would have been a lot of fun, the whole NU IN community really came together to try and make this semester great, and despite all of the craziness of the pandemic and election season, this semester was one full of memories and a great start to my college experience.
