In the days following the death of George Floyd, the San Francisco Bay Area erupted with protests. San Jose and Oakland were two of the first cities in which large groups of protestors took to the streets. Peaceful protestors were met with police in riot gear and risked the threat of tear gas or arrest. Protests intensified as people moved to block local freeways, like Interstate 880 in Oakland. In the aftermath of the protests in San Jose and Oakland, protests spread across the entire Bay Area. Defying local COVID-19 shelter in place ordinances, nearly every city and town in the area held a protest during the week that followed.

I had an internship last year in New york. It's a crowded city. When I got off from work, I have to walk really fast, because if I walk slower than others, there even some bankers would push me to walk forward. They are not intended to do so, just because there are many people get off work during that time. And it's usually a noisy and energetic street. However, during the Covid19 period,it became a quiet street, almost nobody on the street. Also, people on the street would wear masks. I think it's a big change for this street and really shocked my mind.

Photographer, Richard Grant, captured a photo of a child sitting atop their father's shoulders during the Long Beach, California protests that followed George Floyd's death. It appears as if the cops in the photograph are pointing a rubber bullet gun directly at the father and child. The photographer recently posted the unedited photograph to Instagram and a caption stating that the photograph is not fake and that he does not believer the officer was intentionally or directly pointing the gun at the father and child. This statement by Richard Grant combats one of the reasons that perhaps the photograph went viral in the first place. Namely, that the officer was deliberately pointing the gun directly at the child. "First thing the photo is not fake. It is not Photoshopped. What I saw through the viewfinder is what is here. There was color correction and cropping so it could look better on Instagram when I posted it. I have stated before that I do not believe in the 1/500th of a second that the picture was made in that the officer was aiming at the man with the child. This is an uncropped photo with no color correction. I used a 24 -70mm lens at 70mm and f 3.5." Deliberate or not, the photograph reminds us to stop and think about the impact the events of 2020 are having on our children today and in the future.

When I arrived in China from the United States, I was sent to a hotel to quarantine for 14 days. This was the first lunch in my quarantine. There are 2 meats and 2 vegetables and 1 soup, which tasted very good. I thought it was a special treat in the first day, but the following 13 days was all in the same standard in terms of diet. The variety and quality of food even exceeded some restaurants. I also have fruits, milk, and bread every afternoon. The most important thing was, all the food, including fruit, milk, and bread, was totally free. And despite of the fact that I lived in a luxury hotel, I did not have to pay for it. The government paid for all the expenses during quarantine. The purpose was to alleviate people's financial burden so they would not have intention to reject a test or pretend to be normal when they are actually infected. However, with an excessive number of people entering China, people, many of whom were students studying abroad in foreign countries like US, had to pay the fees by themselves. This was not a big problem for them. After all, they could afford it. And compared with staying in the United States, which faced upon a great risk of explosive growth of confirmed cases, they would definitely choose to be in China no matter of what.

The outbreak has made the relationship between China and the United States very tense. As an international student in the United States, I cannot buy a plane ticket back to China, and my friend who is going to study in the United States in China may not be able to successfully enroll in the fall semester. A few years ago, I thought globalization was a big trend and countries began to cooperate with each other in a friendly way. But now, everything seems to get changed. I would like to experience more of the beauty of different countries in the world and hope that the future can return to the era of globalization.

It was March 18. All my finals were either canceled or optional. Although there were about only a thousand confirmed cases in the United States, after studying the patterns of confirmed cases in China and European countries like Italy, I decided to return to China, where the virus was under control in many aspects, especially compared to the United States at that time. I booked a ticket in the afternoon and flew at midnight that day -- this was how urgent it was for me, but most people did not realize the United States was actually at a high risk. All people arriving in China from abroad were required to be quarantined for 14 days. People were distributed based on their destinations. Every destination has an assigned shuttle to pick people up and transport them to a designated quarantine hotel. It was very late and I was waiting for the shuttle. I walked around, looking for a restroom and when I walked close to a medical personnel, he immediately woke up. It was very hot but he had no choice but to wear the protective suit. I couldn't believe he needed to wear it all day long. Every time thinking of this, respect comes out of my heart for the great efforts of Chinese people to control the virus.

From middle of Jan to the end of Feb, China took around 1 month long recovering from the attack by cover-19. By doing lockdown policy on Wuhan and executing quarantine policy to other provinces, China rapidly control the growth of confirmed cases. Quaratine policy strongly help restricting the growth of cases in other provinces and the whole country gather all resources around(food and medical resources) to Wuhan to pull Wuhan out of the trap from cover-19.

After 14-days of quarantine in the hotel, we must take the COVID 19 test before we left to make sure that we were not virus carriers. I took the test on April 18, 8 A.M. We were suggested not to eat before taking the test because the test may cause stomach-churning. I received the report on the next day. The result showed negative and I was allowed to leave and end my 14-day quarantine life.

After we were transported by the government to the issued hotel, I was expecting a relatively low-quality hotel. However, the hotel turned out to be much better than I imagined. Although the hotel was a little old, it was a 4-star hotel anyway. The basic facilities were quite good. During the 14-days quarantine, food was provided by the hotel. We also need to pay for the hotel fee on our own. The overall price was approximately 7000 Chinese yuan, including meals.

When I arrived at Chinese Customs on April 6, I didn't expect an inspection as strict as this. We were accompanied by dozens of staff at almost every corner, all of them wearing protective suits and N95 masks. We were then being lead to do nucleic acid testing one by one. After the test, we were questioned by the staff about where we were coming from and whether we had been exposed to COVID 19 patients. The whole process lasted for about one and a half hours. Then, we were transported to the government-issued hotel for 14 days quarantine.

It is a meme describing tens of thousand people buying their first gun during Pandemic. Gun sales skyrocket during coronavirus pandemic, people showing up at the gun store try to buy something before everything is sold out. However, many people live in California have no knowledge of firearm and firearm laws in the state of California, thus some gun owners made this meme to reflect on those people. This picture reflects how people are planning for a bad situation in the future, and many do realize that when the situation is out of control, they are responsible for their own safety.
