Schools were closed down and I had already pulled my son 2 days prior to the announcement out of fear. A mandatory lockdown is looming so we dropped the kids with my mom for what may be the last time in awhile and went to grab groceries and one last take out from Chilis.

While many graduations across the world are being canceled, many parents and students are looking for other options of graduation. During this time of social distancing and restraint of large gatherings, my brother was graduating from Army Basic Training. I, along with my parents and many other family members, made the trip from Dickson, Tennessee to Fort Benning Georgia. We went to watch his graduation ceremony and spend the few days he was allowed leave with him. However, the night before we were to leave we received word that the ceremony was cancelled and we wouldn’t be allowed to see our soldier as of that time. After hours of waiting to see what might change we finally were notified that the ceremony was still canceled but we were allowed to see our soldier and bring him off base. After traveling down to Fort Benning we got to watch his ceremony on our laptops and were then allowed to go pick up our soldier. We spent the remaining day catching up and doing as much as we could in as little as possible. Finally the end of the night came and we were headed back to our hotel when my brother got a a call that said he had to go back to base. Furious but helpless we had no choice but to bring him back. Once again because of the coronavirus precautions, and President Trump declaring the virus a pandemic that day, we had no clue when we might see him again. The next morning we got our final notification that we could go on base and spend the day with our soldier but he wasn’t allowed to leave and it would be his last chance to see us. We then went on base and spent what little time with him we could. That night we said our goodbyes and started home. My brother is now somewhere in the middle of the woods with the rest of his platoon in isolation. We have had little communication with him but he said that they will be spending five days in the woods, going back to the barracks for a shower, and right back into the woods for five more days. His base is now on lockdown and no civilians are allowed to enter. After this whole mess and scramble to see my brother I’m just happy we got to spend what little time with him we did.

This tweet calls of society to emerge from the pandemic and work to create a better world. Far too many factors allowed for the rise and continued spread of the virus. Society is now facing the consequences of such an intense global crisis, and some of the struggles could have been avoided had appropriate measures been taken, especially in America. Had America had paid sick leave, free health insurance, etc., maybe the spread of the virus could have been slowed. While we will never know, we must do better. We must take what we learn from this and create a better world for all.

Reaching 300,000 is an important milestone during the pandemic. It shows the continued rise of the virus on a global scale and highlights that life will likely not be the same for some time.

My wife and I were traveling in Italy when this started to blow up there. I think when we got there, there were a couple cases maybe. We were in Venice for Carnivale and then traveled to Florence, Pisa and Lucca. We visited the Uffizi museum and the statue of David and then stayed in a castle overlooking Florence. We traveled by train throughout the cities and lots of boats while in Venice. The Sunday we were going to Florence on the train is when we heard Carnivale was canceled. When we got back on Monday to Venice, it was a very different scene with the piazza's and Campos very empty along with the restaurants. During our last couple of days in Italy, they started locking things down. Lombardi region, specifically Milan, got put on lockdown and Rome was quickly heading that direction. We did take precautions and wiping surfaces we were touching down and washing our hands constantly, but did not find any masks we could buy. The most frustrating part was during our travels back to the US. We flew from Marco Polo airport in Venice to Frankfurt airport and then to Denver. We received absolutely no screening or testing whatsoever during that entire trip. The crazy thing is that we received a forehead scan on the way into Frankfurt going to Italy, but absolutely nothing on the way home. While we were both lucky enough to be able to work from home, we both had some mild symptoms and felt given our recent return from Italy that we should get tested. Because of the sole fact that we were not running a temperature it took us over a week to actually get a test and then a few more days to get the results. I feel very fortunate and surprised that we tested negative.

As the film industry takes a huge financial hit now that theatres across the world are closed, they are struggling to continue releasing films on schedule while still turning a profit. The decision to release films for viewing at home marks a huge shift in the way society approaches releasing films to the public.

CV diary Saturday 19 March 2020 I went to the walk today. Have missed the last two and the world has changed so much that I wasn't sure anyone was coming. But there were 5 of us, all keeping our distance. Three did not come because they are self isolating or fearful of having coffee with us ?? A lot of the discussion as we walked about the past two weeks - the virus , restrictions, shopping, toilet rolls, family situations, what is going to happen... G has just come out of two weeks isolation after her holiday in Egypt. D is under pressure from her daughter to change her life - e.g. Not to walk this morning. But she came. We all need the exercise and I/we need to see my friends. When we got to the coffee shop we were able to snag two tables outside. But that wasn't enough for M who moved her seat even further away. Each to their own. But hard not to feel the inherent rejection. G shared her hand sanitizer. During the walk I got a phone call from a friend, cancelling our plans for a film tomorrow. She was amazed that I was outside walking with friends and had stopped for a coffee. Said she and her husband have been in isolation since last Sunday. Cautioned me to do the same. When I got home I thought about my plans. I will go to church tomorrow (it was confirmed late today that the Diocese has belatedly decided to ban all services from Monday). Should I go to the gym on Monday? They seemed well organised last week. Should I cancel my lunch with Susan on Tuesday? Have not seen her since her mother died, I could not go to the funeral or the wake. And she seems quite distressed and needs support. On Wednesday I am expected to present at an important Board presentation to Club members. It is being taped and uploaded to our website for those who cannot get to the meeting. Should I cancel everything after that? LM
