I saw some videos on YouTube. A heartwarming new way of celebrating birthdays that self-isolation wasn’t going to stop the kids from feeling the love. Their neighbor and friends decorate their cars with balloons and banners, and drive by the birthday boy or girl’s home, honking and celebrating from a safe distance.

Due to the COVID-19, we didn't go out. Every time we did, we had to do lots of preparation, such as using disinfection spray, taking shower when we come back, wearing mask and gloves. COVID-19 had a great impact on my world. To keep distancing, I never go out, and even staying at home, we will wash our hands frequently.

Changing courses to online had a significant change to my life. Everything is reorganized. I have to be careful with time management. It is very easy to forget to do homework or to prepare for the exam date. I have to spend more time outside of the class on school work because I have to understand the materials by myself. Need more self-control.

Living in such close quarters is bound to cause arguments among couples. This causes an uptick in divorces at the end of COVID-19. The more anxious we feel may cause us to take that out on the person that’s nearest to us because there is probably no one else we can take it out on. My neighbor has this problem. Sometime I will hear them arguing about their children's problems. For me, I don't think it is a big deal, but they will argue it a lot.

This email was sent the same day I took a walk around the campus (March 23, 2020). It is both a surprise and shocking to me to know there is a case in RIT. Even though no one (expect these two students) is affected on campus as far as I know, it still makes me understand how dangerous this virus can be, especially since I am on campus.

After the number of people that are affected by COVID-19 goes to zero (nationally) in China, both Chinese government and Chinese begin to limit affected cases from overseas, such as returning international students and other foreigners. However, when I look through Twitter, Americans interpret this method differently. They interpreted this as racism against any foreigners. I do not agree or disagree with any of these posts about COVID-19. From my pointof view, both Chinese and Americans are judging each other from incomplete reports, news, or even just some gossip: Chinese believes other countries are not taking this epidemic seriously and suffer heavily, and in order to avoid outside cases coming in, China should restrict foreigners until they are safe. On the other hand, Amercians believe China and the Chinese are responsible for this epidemic,
and that every Chinese is racist and deserves to be discriminated against.

At the beginning of close down in RIT, I was taking a walk around the campus to see if there is any place open. It feels extremely weird to see such an empty walkway during Monday with only a few international students, where normally there will be hundreds of students walking through to get to their classes or other building at this time. Plus, it was rainy that day, which made the whole scene feel more sad.

After I heard from my parents and few relatives back in China about Wuhan’s lock down ended and other provinces in China began to resume normal life, I was interested in how American news will react. Most of the news I found were irrational. This one, however (AP News, wrote by Sam McNeil on April 7, 2020) both recognizes the success of lockdown by Chinese government, and still maintains its critical views in a certain way.For these past few weeks, it is so frustrating to hear and see many arguments from both Americans and Chineses about how bad each other is, and still maintain a neutral position as a Chinese student in the U.S. Sometimes I always feel relieved to see news from the U.S. like this, which agrees with the Chinese method rather than keep insulting each other on who is right or wrong.

I always look through different social media to be aware of anything that might affect me as an international student from China. Donald Trump’s Twitter is one of them, and there are multiple posts from him using the term “Chinese Virus” which worry me. For clarification, I do not agree or disagree with this post from Donald Trump. It is only educational and worrying for me to see following arguments from different people around the world, including U.S. and China. Both sides are attacking and insulting each other over who should be responsible and extend to political/cultural/social issues, disregarding the reliability of these issues.

The Jewish side of my family gathered together on Zoom to celebrate Passover. It was disorganized, and chaotic. The grandmas had no clue what buttons to press, people kept muting themselves, my call crashed every 5 minutes. But in the end, it was about as chaotic as a normal Passover. However, the plagues were modified to include Corona and the final prayer ended “Next year in person” instead of the usual “Next year in Jerusalem.”

This was the last day we spent on the same campus. At the time we didn’t know it was going to be goodbye. We were all trying to stock up on what we needed for a couple weeks to spend some dining dollars [on campus cash equivalency]. Clearly as RIT students we had our priorities in order. One of my friends had a basket full of Monster Energy Drinks, and the other had armfuls of boxed pasta.

A photo taken behind the Liberal Arts hall at RIT on a walk home from the only open post office on campus. The chairs were positioned in a circle by an unknown person. All but one of the chairs is cast in the shadow of the building. There was no one in the area, or on the campus for that matter, not that I saw. I do not know how long the chairs were positioned like that. I took this photo because I thought it was a powerful image that needed to be captured. The circle of chairs indicating a social gathering on a sunny afternoon juxtaposed with the completely empty campus.

The video description is “We as a species, are losing our minds.” This short video opens to four eggs in cups, with the audio “I Want To Break Free” by Queen. When the line “I want to break free” plays, a man pops his head up to sing along, revealing that there were only three eggs in cups, and the fourth egg was actually the man's bald head. I feel this video in my soul, it resonates with me so deeply. It shows the fragility of the human mind and the tendency of our
species to use human as a coping mechanism when facing down trauma.

Governor Charles Baker issued this executive order making 14-day quarantines for out-of-state travelers mandatory on July 24, 2020, in a departure from the advisory "order" declared in March asking travelers to either quarantine or avoid the commonwealth all together. This order exempts seven Northeastern states whose COVID levels had been deemed "low-risk," but required all out-of-state travelers from the remaining 43 states, and returning residents, to self-isolate or obtain a negative test result 72 hours prior to arrival. Failure to meet these guidelines carried with it a penalty of a $500/day fine; a feature that was absent from the earlier travel advisory guidelines. With Massachusetts having seen improvement from the springtime surge that left tens of thousands of residents infected and over 8,000 dead, the Commonwealth sought to stay ahead of the virus curve and squelch an expected resurgence, as tens of thousands of returning students from across the country prepared to descend upon greater Boston colleges and universities in the fall.

As a teacher I have witnessed quite a large debate playing out at school board meetings, over social media, and across the dinner table about whether or not schools should reopen for the fall semester. Perhaps one of the most compelling arguments I have seen is this recent tweet from President Trump. This description is very much full of sarcasm. Please, for the love of all humanity, consider the common good. Teachers want to go back to school but we want to do it safely. For right now, we need to be ok with teaching online. It's not ideal but we can make it work.
